who will you vote for, & why? |
Still writing in HRC. But that doesn't help Obama, who could have earned my vote with a female VP pick. |
So, you'd prefer. by not voting for Obama, to get McCain one vote closer to closing in on Obama, & ensuring a right-winged, Supreme Court appointee, who will make sure the woman's right is at stake??!! Something that HRC stands for?? SMART MOVE! |
I'm (very) unenthusiatically voting for Obama. |
And I can't spell. |
No problem, as long as you can read. Just look for "Obama" ![]() ![]() ![]() |
I am a little surprised...why did Obama pick a female VP (a pseudo-Hillary)? Certainly a Barbara Boxer or a Pat Schroeder (hec, even Pelosi) would've been a great turn of events and would probably have retained some HRC voters (assuming some of the HRC supporters liked the aspect of a female in the White House). |
I thought the word was that lots of HRC supporters would have considered choosing some other woman to be the supreme insult to Hillary. That's not a question, just a reminder that he was in a damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't situation. |
I genuinely don't know if that's true. I think he wanted to compensate for his lack of national security experience but didn't want to pick HRC. The only woman he seriously considered was Kathleen Sebelius. But apparently Joe Biden began to vigorously campaign for either VP or secretary of state immediately after withdrawing from the race, to such an extent that he has dropped all elements of his Iraq policy that conflicted with Obama's. Susan Rice is apparently the figure who helped Biden adjust his views, and who was his strongest advocate with Obama. Dick Morris, whose name describes him well but who is often uncannily right, agrees with you about why Obama didn't pick another woman, and you may both be correct. He thinks HRC's supporters would have been fine with a different, equally qualified woman. He believes Obama should have chosen HRC or another woman and that not doing so will cost him the election. I wrote in the running mate thread that I think choosing Biden will cost him the election, so perhaps that's the same thing. How weird to think that I agree with Dick Morris! |
To the specific names the PP raised - Barbara Boxer is wayyyy too far to the left to sell to middle America. And Pat Schroeder has been out of the game in any serious sense for a long time.
Sebelius was a serious possibility -- but had he picked her, he would have had a much harder time making the case that his team is prepared to handle national security issues on par with McCain's long-time experience. Biden's experience on that scores is a huge asset. There weren't any prominent female Democrats with similar credentials... which says something about this country and the politcal process. I certainly don't begrudge Obama for not picking a woman - but I'm one of those wacky feminists who believes people should be judged on their merits, not on their gender. |
Amen!!! |
HRC supporters made it clear that they'd be FURIOUS if Obama picked another woman besides Hillary. That ruined it for any other possible female pick. It's been all over the media and my MIL who is one of those super HRC supporters pretty much confirmed that claim when she visited us a month ago. |
As a HRC supporter, I find it insulting that McCain's camp thinks he will win my vote simply by choosing a women as a VP. I have supported HRC based on her achievements and policies. Its offensive to think women who supported HRC will vote for someon who has none of her experience and holds complete opposite policy positions just because she is a women.
The more McCain campaigns the less I can tolerate him. I probably would have have just voted for Obama and not been as active as I would have been for HRC but with Palin on his ticket for obvious reasons that he thinks he can get HRC votes I will do more to suppoer Obama. |
