Anyone have any ideas on websites that advertise vacancies at the last minute for a much reduced price? My wife and I are on a very limited budget but we do have a lot of flexibility and can leave on a days notice. We want to get out of town for 2 nights and go to a beach (NC, VA, or DE) and would love to find a website that offers places that perhaps have received a cancellation or have gone unrented. I have looked on VRBO, but didn't see anything that great that would rent for just 2 nights in the middle of the week. Thanks for any insight.
There's an app called homeaway that has listings. I'm not sure they advertise last minute deals, but you might contact some of the listings and see if they'd do something like that. I may do the same thing, now that youve given me the idea

We have done this many times on VRBO and Homeaway...contact the owners directly to ask if they will discount a last minute trip and/or allow a shorter stay. We have gotten some great deals on fantastic places this way. The owners are usually very happy to work/negotiate with us because they would rather have their property filled than sitting empty. It never hurts to ask!
We rented a condo at sea colony west at the last minute for memorial day weekend through resort quest. There were very limited options since most rentals are weekly, but we found one that was willing to give us a break since it was just days before the holiday weekend. I suggest calling some of the local rental agencies directly and asking if they have any flexible options. Most of the search engines online restrict the dates to weekly rentals, but we discovered that a direct call usually overrides that if you wait until the week of the travel dates.

I can't say enough good things about airbnb.com. Feel free to PM me if you want more details on our experience with it, but we found that most postings were accomodating in terms of our travel dates, and (depending on location and availability of course) generally we found excellent values. Good luck!
