hello! my 10 week old (12 lbs) can go almost 12 hours without food at night but...does not sleep straight through. we will put her down around 830 and she always wakes up around 1 am. but she is not looking for food! we then put her straight into her swing where she will sleep until 7am. any ideas how to cut out this 1am wakeup?? she is swaddled and tends to break out but will wake up around 1 regardless of if shes made her way out of the swaddle. |
i'm sorry, most parents would kill to be in your situation. (i know i would have!) I would consider offering a bottle (I'm assuming you're nursing), but otherwise I think you just have to be patient. My son did a lot of sleeping in the swing up until he was around 4 months. |
My baby was in a similar situation. He first slept (around 8 hours) thru the night at 5 weeks, and we cut out night feedings after that because he consistently slept through the night and was in the higher percentiles for height and weight on the growth curve so we felt more comfortable with not feeding in the middle of the night.
Anyway, he seemed to wake up a lot around 12 weeks to 4 months in the middle of the night but was not hungry. We just soothed him by giving his pacifier, turning on the mobile or music box in his crib, reswaddling, or rocking him if he really wouldn't go back to sleep. It worked about 99% of the time, but did require some frequent trips into the nursery on some nights to replace the paci. At 6 months now, he's back to sleeping 11-12 hours per night with no wakeups. It is pure bliss. Like the pp said, I really don't think your baby waking up at 1 am is a huge problem -- a lot of parents would kill to be in your situation! |
Yeah, this is just a physiological thing-- MOST babies are not wired to sleep 12 hours straight this early.
What happens if you try to soothe baby back to sleep without resorting to swing? Baby wakes up again after 1 a.m.? Personally, with a baby who is such a good sleeper at this age, I would avoid resorting to a crutch like the swing. (Actually, #1 was a terrible sleeper, and I still avoided resorting to swing, since technically babies are not supposed to sleep in them during the night and the sleep experts are not fans of motion sleep-- however, if I'd had older children when she was born, I'm sure I wouldn't have been so high and mighty about it.) I would try to give tools like a PP suggested (pacifier, reswaddle, music box, lovey) that will help baby resettle on herself w/out creating dependence upon the swing. Often baby sleep changes so much around 4 months or so, so all you can do before then is try to instill good habits, and survive. Is the 1 a.m. waking really killing you? Because most 10 months old don't come anywhere close to sleeping 12 hours straight, nor should they, despite what some people might say...in fact, the one friend I had who was blessed with one was ordered by her pediatrician to wake the child up every 4 hours in the middle of the night anyway because sleeping too deeply can be a risk factor for SIDS (plus, the doctor wanted the baby eating in the night, so that is another factor that you don't have to worry about if you aren't concerned about your milk production or baby's weight gain). Congrats on your still-new baby! |
I agree with PP at 9:38 - we have one of those Fisher Price aquarium things that hooks to the side of the crib. When DS was that age, we just went in and turned it on (without interacting with him) and popped his paci back in and he would always go back to sleep... |
OMG I would kill for this problem! Just to put it in perspective, my daughter is almost 7 months old and sleeps from 7-11, and then wakes up every 30-60 minutes after that! |
OP you are so freaking lucky. My 12 month old doesn't sleep as well and still "needs" to eat twice per night. You have NO idea. |
