Cystoscopy

Anonymous
My DH has had blood in urine and a bladder infection. It presented like kidney stones (acute pain, followed by a lot of blood in urine for about an hour, and then urine cleared). He has an upcoming cystoscopy scheduled. Has anyone had this? What did you find out? DH is still uncomfortable, but hospital won't/can't move up cystoscopy.

I had one done due to microscopic amount of blood being found in my urine (I didn't have any other symptoms). The procedure was done without any sedation, which was probably a mistake. The exam itself was very uncomfortable and a bit painful at times and it was uncomfortable/painful urinating for the next day or two. If I had to do it over again, I would ask for sedation.... Good luck.

I've had three over the years, not the most fun I've ever had. Two were in the office, the other in a hospital. The hospital one was fine because I was sedated, the office ones sucked. They used a numbing gel, but it didn't seem to do any numbing. The aftermath is ok, a bit sore for a day or so when you pee, but not bad. Good luck.

I've had two one with sedation at 18 due to kidney pain and a high white cell count in my urine. That one was actually the bad one due to some cutting the urologist did to widen the urethra. Bled and massive amounts of pain for days. The second was looking for extensive scarring from the first for fertility issues, that one was only the local numbing. I was a little uncomfortable after that one and peed alot for a few hours after but went to work that day.

I've had two cystoscopies due to small amounts of blood in my urine. Everything was fine. The procedure itself isn't horrible. The anticipation was probably the worst part. Is it a "pleasant" experience that you would want to have every few weeks? Nope. Is it the worst thing that will ever happen to you? Nope. It was somewhat uncomfortable at times (especially when the scope goes past the prostate and into the bladder) but it's not horrible. They give you some pills that take away the burning sensation when you pee afterwards. I took one or two for the first day and then I was fine. The pills turn your pee a flourescent orange. The procedure isn't fun but it's not as bad as you think it's going to be.
