Preschool and Daycare Discussion
| If you are open to Montessori, you might also try Manor Montessori. |
There are many posts in the archives about the DC JCC and its former director. I'd take a look if you decide to look into this school. |
| Great school. |

Hi there
I just read through this thread and your email sounds like I could have written it! I too am a non-observant Jew moving to Chevy Chase from SF with my atheist husband and am looking for progressive, secular preschools for my son for the fall 2010! Bizarre.
Anyway, I was hoping that you could share the list of schools that you will be considering with me. I am really at a loss as to how to narrow down a list and am feeling a bit overwhelmed. Thanks so much, Anna |
If you're looking for progressive, try Lowell (www.lowellschool.org) |

Anna,
I would be more than happy to share my final list with you. It sounds like we have a lot in common. Send me a note: elbond@gmail.com Thanks again for all of the responses. -Erika |
| School for Friends is play based and accredited and an all around wonderful school. It is in dupont circle (NW/DC), though several families live in MD. |

| You might also want to consider the Friendship Children’s Center, located near the Friendship Heights Metro station in NW, DC (www.friendshipchildren.org). Our son recently graduated from the pre-school program at the center after having been enrolled there since he was six months old. We’ve been very happy with the program (based on the Creative Curriculum), the teachers, and the care he received. When he left the program, he was very well prepared to enter elementary school. |

Erika,
This may be a bit late, but I wanted to put in my 2cents -- just curious as to why you thought you were 'too conservative' for Waldorf or Oneness-Family School? My daughters, ages 3 and 6 attend Oneness. We have families with a range of beliefs, some observing and non-observant Jews, and international families. Ultimately, it's the integrated curriculum, teaching relevant lessons such as conflict resolution, global awareness, and the nurturing and warm environment drew me to Oneness. The school fosters independence and values individuality. The curriculum includes talking about all religions, not just any particular one - classes visit places of worship - mosques, temples, churches, synagogues, etc - to expose the students that all these religions exist. I'd be happy to chat more if you want. Good luck with your move. Junga |

Oh, if you are interested in the Reggio approach, the Sheridan School offers a summer program called CaSa (creative arts summer adventure) which is Reggio based. FYI.

| If you're open to co-ops but need childcare, what about Concord St Andrew's? They have sibling care for those days that you're co-oping. |
| If you're looking for a securlar preschool in Chevy Chase, you should consider CCBC. For years, the CCBC stood for Chevy Chase Baptist Church Children's Center, but now it's Chevy Chase Bethesda Community Children's Center since the school is NOT affiliated with the church (they only rent the space from the church). It's a great school. |
| Hi -- I am someone looking for essentially everything the OP is looking for (although open to a "flexible" montessorri as well) and felt I knew the short-lists, Lowell, Outdoor Nursery, School for Friends, Harbor, maybe Takoma Children's for playbased, and Apple, Manor or Franklin for Montessori.....BUT I think we will be moving from CC out to Rockville in the next 6 months and I'll need to start my research all over again. Any Rockville folks that can help me? |
LOL here too.
