So I didn't think to ask my DD's pediatrician today but how can she look like a lil chunk but be "super tall" but "average" in weight? I put it in a calculator and this is what came up.
At 6 months: your child is 16.11 pounds, and that is at the 43th percentile for weight. your child is 27.5 inches, and that is at the 92th percentile for height. I'm wondering if the scale was off as I could have sworn she was going to weigh more. BTW, I should also mention at her last visit (4 months) she was in the 95th percentile for both height & weight. My MIL did recently say that she looks like she's thinned out a little, but that much? Thanks! |

Not sure if this will help: DD was 19 lbs 3 oz at her 6 month (95th percentile) and 26 1/2 inches (I think 75th percentile). I don't think your numbers seem off.

I guess I just "wonder" since she seems like a lil chunk. But I guess really it's just that she has a full face (both my husband and I do) and chunky pudgy legs. Boy, if she knows I said this in about her in about 15 years she'll say "Mommmmm".

I don't get it.
So your little one has baby-fat? Don't they all? Are you worried, confused, concerned, gloating? Obviously, your baby is fine - you even took the liberty to crunch the numbers yourself. Even if there was an error in you calculations, I am sure you ped. would've said something if he/she was concerned. Babies will flucuate in weight/height for the first couple of years so being "normal" is relative. As their bodies develop and process calories and fat more efficiently combined with growth spurts and the extra energy needed for crawling, walking, etc. it all evens out. Enjoy your chunky-monkey and be glad he/she is healthy and of good stature. |
Nope not gloating, just checking. Her cousin who's 9 months old, looks thinner, about the same length but seems lighter in weight and I could have sworn that she weighed less. Basically I'm a little perplexed that's all. Anyone else have a baby that has the "baby fat" but baby is on the average marker? (BTW, not saying that average is bad by any means.) Love DD whether she's a chunky monkey or a skinny minny.

| My dd was 15 pounds at 6 months and around 25% for weight. However, she was also 29 inches so she really did look skinny! |

If your daughter had really dropped from the 95th percentile to the 43rd percentile in weight in 2 months, I think your doctor would have mentioned it. My son dropped from the 75th to the 50th in weight over 4-6 months (during the first year) and the doctor mentioned it but was not concerned. He did say docs usually take notice of a a change in weight more than 25 percentage points and ones of 50% or more really catch their eye. Nothing wrong with her weight as it is, however, I'm surprised by such a big change on the scale in such a short amount of time. Our ped maps out the height and weight on the chart every visist -- does yours do that?
Anyway, why don't you just weigh her at home? Get on your scale by yourself and then get on your scale with baby in tow. Also, it is alway possible that the one of the measurements could have been off. I know according to our records our son shrunk from the time he was born and his 2 week appointment. |

Thanks PP. I guess that was my whole point, it seemed odd to me that there was such a change in such a short period of time. Or possibly the scale was just off.
I will try and get on the scale (yikes -hahaha) and then pick her up to see if it's the same or different. If there's a difference I might even take her back into the office so that her chart is corrected. Our ped does the charting as well - and he didn't say one way or another that it was good/bad or even question such a change, just the fact that she's doing well and average in weight. Although the more I think about it I may change peds as he doesn't really have a good beside manner - either that or I get the feeling he doesn't like me. (Seriously, and DH says nothing when I say that...I think he feels that the ped doesn't particularly care for me either, not sure why.) |
| My DC dropped pretty quickly on the charts from 4 months to 6 months, and then 9 months. No one was worried, both DH and I are really small and DC was born quite big. He looked chunky throughout to me, because, frankly, I think most babies basically look chunky until they start to walk. I don't think there's any reason to dwell on the numbers. |

Is your baby crawling or rolling around a lot? I wouldn't be surprised at that weight drop if she is mobile and burning lots of energy. My baby went up a lot in percentiles, up to 75%, between birth and 6 months, and then once he started crawling, he started to slide down. Now he's down at 15% at age 2. The doctors were worried for a while at the drops, but after some tests and seeing how he's hitting his milestones, they just decided he was meant to be low on the range.
It is also possible that they measured a bit wrong at the earlier visit. |
| At my DS's 6-month checkup he had gone from 75% in weight to 30% in weight and my pedi wasn't worried at all. Since he hadn't started solids and many babes that age do - so when compared to his peers, he was going to seem low in percentage. But, I was surprised because to me he looked like a chunky monkey (he also went from 50% in height to 30%) |
| Weight the two of you together then weigh yourself alone. Subtract the numbers and you'll get a pretty good idea if the doc's scale was on target or not. |

OMG my baby is the 95th percentile.
OMG my baby is at the 50th percentile (average! horror!) OMG my baby is at the 15th percentile OMG my baby was at the 90th percentile and NOW is at the 50th percentile. OMG my baby has a percentile? Any others out there have a baby with a percentile? How did you cope? |
