Koran burnings

What do we have, 85,000 troops over there, average age maybe 20 years old? Someone said dispose of this. One of the 85,000, maybe a 19 year old private, throws it into the trash can. How many of you know if you trash is burned or buried? How many of you know how to properly dispose of a Koran? How many mistakes did you make as a 19 year old? I bet most US 19 year olds do not know what the koran is or how to dispose of it. It's not really about the Koran, it's about 10 years of war and all it brings.

I generally agree with you. But, I bet those 19-year-olds know how to handle grenades. After 10 years, someone should have thought about incorporating local traditions into the training. Not to mention that someone probably should have told the Marines not to piss on the bodies of people they have just killed.

I wonder what would happen if Iran invaded us and some of their soldiers started burning Bibles.

Please. You don't think the Christian fundies would go nuts over that?

Obama is too smart to invade Iran. But he's too much of a sell-out to try and stop Israel from doing so. Bibi owns us and he knows it.

Obviously it was an ignorant blunder, but an apology was issued and riots are continuing. I think continuing to apologize repeatedly is no longer productive.

Did anyone get fired?

I think it was unfortunate and stupid, we apologized and they are still rioting and killing. Karzai wants a public trial. They won't let it go and they don't appreciate anything that we have done for them or are trying to do. I do not think burning bibles would result in rioting. We cant win over their hearts and minds so we should stop trying and come home. Let special forces, drones and intelligence community handle it. They are more upset over this than girls schools being bombed, suppression of women, honor killings.... It boggles my mind.

If you are an Afghan, exactly what would you appreciate about someone bringing a war to your country? What are we trying to do for them? I thought we were trying to kill enemies of the US.

People rarely view being invaded and occupied as a favor. It is a peculiarly American mindset that we can invade a country, kill untold number of civilians, start choosing the new leaders, and then expect the local population to be grateful. As for girls' schools being bombed, NATO forces did it just yesterday:

http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2012%5C02%5C23%5Cstory_23-2-2012_pg7_4

That's after NATO forces killed an additional 8 children earlier this month.

Both in Iraq and Afghanistan, the local population has tremendous resentment toward the American forces. Just as we would resent an occupying force if it destroyed our country, killed our neighbors and relatives, and selected new leaders who had just arrived to the US from abroad. The Koran burning is simply the straw that broke the camel's back (no pun intended, I'm not even sure Afghanistan has camels). The root of the problem is the inability of many Americans to see the people whom they we are occupying as equal human beings. We see them as irrational fanatics who won't accept our apology. They've had plenty of apologies. They get apologies when their weddings are bombed. They get apologies when their relatives are "collateral damage". US forces drop off a handful of dollars and call it even. Soldiers who commit massacres get dishonorable discharges (and we offer apologies to the victims). Yes, US forces should leave, but not because the people are ungrateful.

The bible is a book to Christians, there is no doctrine that teaches that the actual physical pages that the words are printed is sacred
In Islam the physical book must be treated with much respect, no highlighting verses, writing on the side of the page, must be in a high place, i.e. another book cannot sit on top of it.
