11 new charter applications

Anonymous
The DC Public Charter School Board (PCSB) accepted 11 applications to open new public charter schools by the February 1st deadline. The charter schools, if approved, would open in fall 2013.

The applications offered a variety of program options: two elementary schools with language immersion (Hebrew and Arabic); four young adult education programs with one focused on job training in renewable energy technologies, one on preparing for postsecondary education and employment, another on alternative education targeted to at-risk youth and the other a virtual/online program; an elementary/middle school; a college prep high school; a Montessori program and a combined traditional and online K-12 program.

Wow. A charter school with a desired location in Ward 3.

Whatever happened to the Waldorf group? I've been surprised they haven't reapplied. They had a lot of backing from the Waldorf community.

I disapprove of a charter school with Hebrew language immersion. I sort of feel similarly about Arabic, but not as strongly, as at least Arabic is spoken through a large segment of the world instead of by one single religious minority.

Why should taxpayers fund a Jewish school?

I'm disappointed that there aren't more middle and high schools being created...there is still a serious lack of choice

It wouldn't be a Jewish school. Did you read their executive summary, available thru the link provided by the OP? See this video for an example of a similar program in NYC: http://video.nytimes.com/video/2010/06/24/education/1247468095607/dual-language-school-offers-hebrew.html?ref=nyregion

15:09-- you sound a bit anti semetic. I mean Hebrew is still a living language, spoken by an entire country of Jews, Mulims and Christians alike who live there.

At least it is spoken somewhere...Washington Latin anyone?

Hold on now. Asking why taxpayers should fund a Jewish school is not anti-semitism. Get a grip and don't hurl that accusation around so casually.

And, yes, a Hebrew immersion school would be a Jewish school. You know it as well as I do.

I oppose [yet another] school dedicated to serving at-risk youth. What is this, 17 such schools now?

And yes, a help-at-risk-youth school would be an African American school. You know it as well as I do.

oops! Did I really say that?! Sounds a little, I dunno, bigoted when a white person says that about black people. Just like it does when you -- a person of color, of that I am certain -- says it about white-skinned Jews.

Peace.

Hebrew is closely linked to Jewish culture. Are you suggesting that being an at-risk youth is closely linked to African-American culture? Or, did you just make a poor analogy?

Awful comparison. Really. Opposing taxpayer funding for a religious school isn't in the same ballpark. See the concept of separation of church and state....

I have no hatred for Jews. I don't indulge in stereotypes about Jews. I would enlist if we went to war to protect Israel. But I similarly will not be cowed by raising a fair question that isn't motivated by anti-semitism, and I say "shame on you" for suggesting that it is.

NP here. Agreed it is a bad analogy. But comparing a Hebrew School to Roots PCS wouldn't be, would it?

That's a closer comparison. I suppose I could argue that one either way. But, since I don't have time right now, I'll abstain.

I could have sworn I recently saw an article stating jews came in many colors, especially these days what with adoption and interracial marriage and the movement of ethiopian jews out of ethiopia...
