So Sad...

Did anybody else hear about the dog that killed a 2 month old in Oklahoma? Apparently the baby was left alone in a swing. Mom and grandma were home, but apparently not in the same room...

Makes me so sad.

Yes, it was on CNN. Horrible story. Poor innocent baby.

My mother (not a dog person) sent me an article similar to that when my first was born. At the time, I was annoyed because our dogs were (are) still our "babies" too...but it really doesn't hurt to be reminded that animals are unpredictable.

I would neither leave my dog, nor my toddler/young child in the same room alone with my infant. There have also been really sad stories with young kids throwing babies or hurting them when they thought they were playing.

I always say a baby needs supervision unless in the crib!

It is so very sad. We have a small dog-and our son was never alone with our dog-and she's a sweetie. I've read too many of these stories-it should have never happened. I'm surprised that a Lab would do this kind of thing-unless it's mixed with Pit.

Even IN the crib at times. When we were kids, my pre-school age cousin woke up from his nap, went into his 6 week old sister's room, dragged something over, somehow got his sister out of the crib and threw her on the floor. Luckily (miraculously) she wasn't hurt. The parents only figured this out when they found her sleeping on the floor, and had the brother show them (using a doll) how it happened.

What a sad and tragic story.

This gets me worried-we have a Yorkshire Terrier and don't know how he will react when the baby arrives.

I remember being warned not to put the baby in a moving swing in a room with a dog - they'll instinctively attack because of the movement.

This is sad. But it's also a little strange. Why didn't any of the adults in the home hear the baby?
It's also sad that this story underscores the inadequate parenting that teens (17, 18) can provide. This was grossly negligent.

There is an update on the story with comments.

Our Yorkie is a sweetie. Even then, we kept a watchful eye on her and our son-she was used to getting a lot of attention. She never once snapped at him-and even now that he's running and irritates her to NO END-she's extremely patient. The other day, he fell on her and it scared her-but she handled it well. We now have to watch him-so he doesn't hurt her.

He ADORES her-calls for her-like we do. He wants to see her first thing in the am. He feeds her and lays his head on her. Loves on her all the time.

It's common sense to not leave a dog and a baby unattended.

Please don't pass judgement against Pit Bulls due to the ignorance of people. Unfortunately a really great breed is being ruined by the negligence of some really irresponsible people (to put it nicely). Sadly there are lots of breeds that are more atypical to cause deaths in humans but any dog regardless of the breed could severly maim or kill a 2 month old child.

I feel horrible for that baby and couldn't imagine and it makes me sick to think about such a thing.

I just read the story. Give me a break. The "dog" was a 3 m.o. puppy, the kid was left alone for up to 2 hours in the swing and the dad had a restraining order put on him by the mom last year. They sound like disasters as parents and as people (they look like trailer trash in the photos). Who knows where they got the dog from...maybe a puppy mill, and who leaves a puppy with an infant...for that matter, who leaves a 2 mo infant in a swing by himself for hours at a time???

I know. I love dogs. The breed is ruined-and that's what I meant to say. Pits are overbred. Now the news indicates it was lab. The puppy was euthenized-it's sad story all the way around.

There are just too many things about this story that don't add up. First, how does a little puppy get to a baby in an ELEVATED swing? It didn't say anything about the swing being knocked over; it just said the swing was elevated. Second, I don't care WHERE you are in the house (or if you are sleeping), if a baby is being attacked by a dog--viciously or not--the baby had to be screaming at the top of his lungs. Think about how a baby reacts to one little prick from a vaccine. I suspect there must be more to this story. Either the baby or the mother and grandmother had to be literally unconscious when this happened.

I agree. A babies first reaction is to cry-and loud. The puppy didn't look that big either.

Could have been prevented.
