How much can I expect to pay?

Ladies,

I am on the BCBS PPO through my firm (its BCBS Massachusetts), and am unclear on what exactly the policy covers. Went for my first prenatal visit and only had to pay the $10 co-pay. What can I expect insurance to cover in terms of pregnancy and birthing costs? What should I expect to pay out of pocket?

FWIW, I'm with Foxhall OB/GYN and would be delivering at Sibley.

Thanks!

You need to call your insurance to figure that out.

Call your insurance company, they will answer all your questions about that.

I had BCBS of Mass. also. I also paid $10 for the first prenatal visit and that was it. I actually don't remember paying any other co pays because I remembered being worried that all these co pays would start to add up especially in the third trimester when I would have to go in more frequently. The receptionist said that prenatal visits sorta fall under their own category and get billed a little differently. All the sonograms, belly checks, blood work, etc. were covered.
Each doc. may be a little different, though, depending on how much they charge for their services and how much of it gets passed on to the insur. company.

We had a $250 payment when me and DD were discharged after delivery (natural). However, we had to go back twice for jaundice issues and each time we were discharged we had to pay $250 (our pediatrician should've just let DD stay two extra nights to be sure the jaundice was gone instead of disharging and readmitting us, but anyways...).

One more thing, call up BCBS and ask to be enrolled in the baby blue program (I think that is what it was called). You'll great a really nice book - called Preganncy, Birth, and the First Year - that has great pictures, advice, information, and suggetions on how to "survive" the next year or so. You'll also be mailed literature that corresponds with your pregnancy and birth.

Ask the HR folks for more clarification. They should have the exact $s as to what you and what BCBS pays for.

You really need to speak with your HR rep or contact the insurance directly. In setting up your plan, your employer worked with the company's BCBS rep to negotiate co-pays, deductibles, out of pocket maximums, etc. While you share the BCBS PPO network with many people, it is your employer that determines all the varying costs.

While one person might only pay $10, your plan may be written that you need to meet a $500 deductible for example. When you went through open enrollment you should have received a Summary of Benefits that would have listed this info. If you haven't told your employer that you are pregnant yet and don't feel comfortable disclosing this to HR, call BCBS or login into their website.

Also, if you're with Foxhall, they will do an estimate of the amount you'll owe THEM (not the hospital, anesthesiologist, pediatrician, etc., etc.) for prenatal care and the delivery, and will provide you with that amount pretty early on and ask you to either pay up front or set up some sort of payment plan. Re: all of the other costs, we just called our insurance and they estimated it for us.
