Anybody make sushi at home?

If so, where do you get your sushi-grade fish around here? What do you feel are the indispensable tools for making sushi at home?

I can't help with the fish part, sorry! (I'm a vegetarian). But I make veggie sushi all the time at home. I used to have some bamboo rolling sheets To make sushi with. But they are hard to clean, and I hate having one use type gadgets. I've found that those plastic silpat sheets (that u use for making cookies) work great for rolling sushi!!! So that and a sharp knife is all u need!

I think a rice cooker is another essential.

Anyone can tell you with a straight face that you are getting "sushi grade". The only way to really get proper fish is to become good at picking it out yourself, and making your menu based on what is really good that day.

I'm a vegetarian too, so can't give you advice on the fish part. The $17.99 rice cooker from Target is awesome. Lundberg's sushi rice is good but kind of expensive; if you go to any Asian food store, you could get a huge sack of rice for a much better price. I'm not a fan of the bamboo sheets myself; I just roll them on my own.

I am also a vegetarian so can only speak for veg sushi. I read a while back that you should wrap your bamboo mat with saran wrap for effortless cleaning and it really works like a charm.

I love making avocado rolls.

Well, a rice cooker is good for making regular rice as well. I eat regular rice w/ tofu and veggies, and I use it for sushi every day. It's seriously the best $17.99 we ever spent. The kid brings sushi to school instead of spending $$ on school lunch. I bring sushi to work every day instead of buying fast food or eating sandwiches (that leaves me hungry). My husband (who is not Asian) uses it to make some sort of New Orleans dish. I think it's a good deal!

Why buy one more thing when you can use a bowl and the microwave?

1 cup of rice, 3 cups of water, salt (if you like it) and 15 minutes. TA-DA!

You sound like someone who did not grow up eating sushi. And may not really like sushi were it not a trendy thing to do.

Because any ordinary Asian household has a rice cooker and which makes your rant sound so silly.

Fellow Asian here. I don't think the poster was ranting -- Americans just don't understand My coworkers think I'm on some insane diet, but it's not about weight at all. I grew up eating rice w/ veggies & sushi every day!

Because if you cook rice frequently, it saves you a lot of effort. It shuts off automatically and keeps the rice warm for a long period of time, which means you can dump everything in and go do something else. It's not hard for that to save you $20 worth of effort.

Anyways, back to OP's question.

One thing I would recommend is to keep powder wasabi in the pantry. Just add water. It keeps for many years, unlike the paste.
