Are stores obligated to card you if you buy liquor?

I was at Trader Joe's last night and bought some champagne and got carded. I'm 41 and 6-7 years ago when my kids were little, people on the street would often think I was the nanny because I "looked too young to have kids."

But of late I'm starting to get some lines around the eyes and lips, so I was wondering if the guy was obligated to ask or if this was a nice holiday present. (DH usually buys the liquor so I have no frame of reference).

I think some stores have internal policies that they card everyone. Others do for those who look under a certain age. My mother is 65 and still gets carded at her local package store. Even though they know her! Just depends on the store's policies, I think.

Some do if you look like you are under a certain age that varies from store to store. Some card everyone so that there isn't a chance of someone complaining. When I was working as a cashier and the company policy was card anyone that looks like they were under 35 I used to card many of the female customers and got many a smile and "Thank You"

Some stores won't let you close a check without entering a date.

Yep, I've heard the policy is if they could even for one second, in a dark, candlelit room appear to possibly be one minute under the age of 40, you are supposed to card.
