She can't understand me ![]() I'm ESL but I get people all the time saying to me that I barely have an accent. Some people even can't believe English is not my first language. I'm so so so very disappointed! That's all. |
I don't have Siri, but a good friend of mine does. She is American, has no accent whatsoever, and Siri "doesn't understand" basic questions my friend asks. As in, "Where is <insert local restaurant name>?" |
Make sure you speak directly to her in a clear voice without background noise. Siri understands my 6 year old -- so I think yours may be a case of operator error. |
Are you sure Siri is turned on? The phone comes with Siri off. Voice Command is turned on and you might think that is Siri, but it's not nearly as good.
Here is a good explanation of what you need to do: Do note that when you get your phone up and running, Siri isn’t set up to run by default. You’ll need to go to settings and turn it on. You’ll find Siri under General in settings. There you get the option to use the “raise to speak” feature. If you ask Siri for directions, Siri will respond that you first to need to turn on Location Services for Siri. You’ll find Siri listed under Location Services on the main settings screen. I’m guessing a lot of folks will be trying Siri out as soon as they are up and running. But if you don’t turn it on all you get is Voice Command. Interesting that Siri isn’t on by default." http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/10/14/iphone-4s-first-impressions-and-turning-on-siri/ |
If you are ESL, you have an accent sweet pie. Believe me. |
And I guess you're assuming this just reading my anonymous post in a virtual discussion forum. Hm... I'd rather trust my speech therapist, professors, teachers, co-workers and friends who actually have HEARD me speaking. Thanks for the useless post, though. |
Hey Jeff thanks a lot I'll check this out now. |
How obnoxiously condescending! How many languages do you speak, "sweet pie?" (Allow me to point out for your future reference that in English, the expression is "sweetie pie," not "sweet pie.") |
Wrong, sweet pie. I'm ETL (third) and I don't have an accent either. People are completely amazed when they find out I learned English in my late teens. I missed my vocation as a spy, although I occasionally mix my metaphors, which might have killed my career and me in the process. |

So, wait... you claim to have learned English after childhood, and to speak it without an accent, but you dismiss OP's claim that she can do the same? That's phenomenally rude and egotistical. |
OP here...
The Siri feature was indeed on... Anyway, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one annoyed with the Siri lady. I'm laughing so hard at the DYAC and the Siri version of their site. So freaking funny! |
I believe the PP was responding to the "you have an accent, sweet pie" poster. |
My mom has a strong regional (US) accent and Siri doesn't understand much of what she says. |
I must admit I never even use Siri, except for when I want to entertain my 18-month old by having her talk to him. Just doesn't seem worth the hassle to me. |
