We are looking at getting a new car in a week and I am not putting a lot of stock in the trade-in value. Since it is no haggle pricing, the trade-in doesn't factor into the price and we already put a deposit on the hybrid car to come in. Also, both with my first car and my husband's first car we got the whole song and dance at the dealership about how they have to sell it to a wholesaler and how much it cost them blah blah blah and an offer of $500 for the trade-in. In my case the blue book was more like $2500-3000.
So anyway, I am thinking of going to Car Max, We Buy Cars, and Fitzgerald Auto Mall. I also read somewhere that the smaller used car lots have problems getting the cars they want at the cost they need to turn it around to sell them. I don't know if it would be worth it to go to one of the smaller used car lots directly. Does anyone have experience with those places - good or bad? |
We've taken cars to CarMax (for one, we got an amazing price offer from CarMax that we took; for the others, we were low-balled and took the cars elsewhere).
We've sold a car through Ebay... we've sold a car through Craigslist - both times getting KBB value. Good luck, and you'll love your hybrid! |
I also went to Carmax each time I sold. I always got a few hundred above KBB - it was based on mileage and good maintenance. |
i went to carmax. but the amt they were willing to pay for the car was still dismal. if i could do it over again, i'd fiure out a way to just sell it privately-- like washpost listings or craigslist-- and then buy a new car. |
Carmax, four times. They especially like Toyotas and Hondas and that's all we buy, so we get good prices. Higher than trade-in value. |
Craigslist, all the way.
We got about 1200 more than what Carmax offered (3000 vs 1800 - it was an old car ![]() |
We haven't had very good luck at all selling cars through Carmax. Last time they offered us several THOUSAND below Kelley's value so we ended up selling it through Craigs List - like PP, we got a good price for the car and cash on the spot. |
Carmax is always going to offer you a lower price than you will get selling it on your own. They are banking on the convenience/lazy factor...people don't want the hassle of selling it on their own & dealing with the no shows, etc. The bottom line, however, is that you will be throwing away at least $500, if not up to thousands, depending on the type of car you are selling. As a matter of fact, there are people on craigslist that specifically advertise that they will buy your car for "x amount ($500 sometimes) over your Carmax offer, because they know they can resell it & make a nice, easy profit & they have the time to do it. Good luck!

Thanks for the craiglist tip. I didn't even think about there being people that make their offers based on the Carmax offer. |
We bartered our car, trading it for babysitting hours. Great deal for us and for her. |
No problem...let us know how it turns out. Daddio |
Craigslist. Carmax was offering us a ridiculous price. |
OP here. I went to Carmax and was pleasantly surprised with the offer. I think it is like someone said - that they like Honda and Toyotas and we were selling a Honda. However, in the end, the dealer was willing to match the Carmax offer on the trade. Since it was a no haggle pricing situation and we were buying a hybrid at that - I think the dealership was just trying to go above and beyond with the customer service which was very much appreciated by us. We Buy Cars was willing to go a little above Carmax - but for us it wasn't enough to make it worth driving the car back from the dealership (when we had to go to a further dealership to get the car) and we just wanted to be done with everything. |
