What kind of help are you looking for? Help with the application per se? Or help directing best fit colleges, good course selection for best chances of success, best fit careers? Or help on the tests required to apply to colleges? How old is the child you're looking to help? There's lots of people willing to take you're money but you need to focus your search, or at least your question here.

Independent Educational Consultant Association (or something like that) has member listings of college consultants.

If your son is a senior in high school, I'd recommend trying Georgetown Learning Center in McLean and Great Falls. They have small-size workshops for college apps and you can pay (about $72/hr I think) to get one-on-one help with the application process and essay writing. Unless money is no object, I'd be careful of some of the educational consultants who can charge thousands of dollars. Also if he's a senior, it's time to become well acquainted with his high school guidance counselor.

Thank you so much for the info and I truly understand the concern with the consultants. DS is very responsible and is working with the guidance counselor. This is our first child and we are overwhelmed with something else that needs our attention. So thinking that hiring someone might be a good solution.

I have heard good things about College Coach. http://www.getintocollege.com/app/content/families/offering/ They offer college counseling services to corporations but also to individual families. They have an office in McClean.

Your son should write his own college essays.

The application process is for a college to judge how suitable your son is for admission, not you or your consultants.

Neither the dad nor the consultant will write the essay. As stated, the dad is in no position to help the son through the process. I doubt you'll provide zero assistance to your DC through the process. Good consultants consult; they don't write essays.

I'm the parent of a preschooler, not a high schooler, so forgive me for being obtuse, but when I was 17 years old and applying to colleges, *I* did the legwork. I went to my high school's career center and looked up the types of colleges that I wanted to attend. I found their applications. I filled out their applications. I talked to my mom about it, but she didn't DO anything for me. It was hard, it was stressful, but I did it. Why would you need to HIRE help for this???

Ha! There have been threads on DCUM recently about moms who need to take a leave of absence from work to assist in the college application process. I agree that's over the top but this isn't 1990, either. I think OP here is helping his kid because he's said he can be of zero help. You seem like you read, speak and write English well. You probably went to a college in the US. What if your English was not great and you didn't go to college? Wouldn't you want a bit of help for your kid to navigate the process? I think it levels the playing field just a tad.
