Okay, so I am literally the last woman in North America to make this switch but I'm considering going straight... after more than 4 decades of wearing my hair curly. I have very thick chin-length hair which is deceptively hard to straighten, and I find the process of blowing it straight really tedious and time-consuming. On the other hand, I recently relented and let a stylist blow it straight and the reaction I got made me wonder if it's finally time. Can anyone offer any good recommendations for products ... and do I need some kind of flat iron - does that help or hurt? My normal AM routine involves just using a diffuser for a few minutes and letting my hair do what it wants, and I'm wary about committing myself to a 1/2 hour of standing there frying my head. Thanks for any advice!! |
Well, technically, you're not last. I still love my curly hair...it's just easier.
I have a flat iron that I use for my daughters hair. It works really well, but you have to buy an expensive one in order to save time and effort. The cheap brands just don't do it. Yes, over time, flat-ironing your hair will damage it, so I'd use it sparingly. My sister has friz instead of curl and she decided to get a blowout instead. Honestly, I think it looks dreadful, but it works for her and she says she loves it. Leave yourself options. If you go with a blowout, you'll be changing your hair for some time...until it falls out.....but I'm not sure how those really work. |
Might want to try the non-formaldehyde keratin treatment. |
I blow dry every morning. Time consuming. |
I would also recommend a keratin treatment. However, be aware that getting the treatment is a serious time and money investment - about 4 hours in the salon and $300 - $500 depending on length. And then, for 3 days following the treatment you cannot get the hair wet or put a clip in it or even wear glasses. If you do get the hair wet within the 3 days you have to dry it and flat iron. If you put a clip or wear glasses you are likely to "wrinkle" the hair wherever the clip or your glasses are touching your hair. But after the 3 days, it's so easy to manage and will stay straight for around 12 weeks. |
Um, would not recommend the keratin treatment.
