I try to streer clear of tschotkes and give something the person will use. Depending on the host's personality and length of stay (dinner versus overnight), I've done:

- potted herbs for a cook
- homemade treats (lemon bars/brownies/cookies)if I know they like them
- fresh flowers
- board game (if I know they like them - 80s/90s Trivial Pursuit is always a winner)
- issue and follow-up subscription to a mag I know they'd read (anything from Real Simple to Sports Illustrated)
- regional gift if they're not in the area - I've given DC street vendor kids' tees (5/$10!), politically-themed presents (axis of evil cards or a book of Bushisms), cherry blossom-themed gifts (notecards to writer, lotion to a spa addict), a thimble (for an older relative who collects them)
- fancy bath products

Some of the favorite things I've been on the recieving end of:
- treats from other regions: Vermont maple syrup & pancake mix, barbecue/grill seasonings, See's chocolates
- coffee beans/hot chocolate and a funky mug
- fancy dish soap/hand lotion set (I'd never buy it for myself, so it was a nice change)

I've never met a hostess who didn't appreciate a bottle of wine - jazz it up by including the accessories - the icepack/chiller thing, a cork screw set, those rings that you slip on the stem to identify your glass, etc.

I love the wine and flowers gifts. You don't burden your hostess b/c they are things that will be consumed and enjoyed and enhance her home. Think of what you might enjoy receiving for more ideas, but the previous posters seem to have said it all!

I always go to Williams Sonoma or Sur La Table and buy counter spray and dish soap. At WS, they will put them in a plastic bag and tie it up with ribbon for you. They smell so yummy and most people wouldn't spend $10 for dish soap on themselves when there's the .99 Dawn option at Safeway!

Anything from Cowgirl Cafe in downtown DC has always been a hit with my friends.

I've put sets together with goodies from Trader Joe's. Just toss in a basket or galvanized pail.
