Starting solids soon - recommend your favorit "gear"

Anonymous
DD is almost 5 months and we are going to start solids soon. Have no idea what stuff I need, spoons, bowls etc. Any moms/dads have favorite brands or types of cutlery/kitchenware out there? Anything else that a FTM might not think of? And at what point will DD need a sippy cup? Thanks!

mom of twins here we use munchkin bowls and spoons i would get plastic bibs easy to wipe down after eating and they are 8 months and started them on a sippy at 7 months only one DD has taken to it the other still prefers to drink her H2O out of a bottle which is fine with me but usually parents start out cups at 11-12 months

Superbibs are expensive, but you'll only need 2! We do a quick wash at the kitchen sink if needed after eating and hang to dry until the next meal. They go through the wash at least once a week.

Tommee Tippee has a suction placemat that works with their bowls and plates so they can't flip their plate onto the floor.

You can start introducing a sippy cup anytime. Put a little water in it and let them experiment.

We had a booster that sat on a chair (similar to the Fisher Price Space Saver), a collection of spoons, and a few bibs. We liked the munchkin spoons - they were cheap and easy. Take and Toss ones are nice too, especially for self feeding. We had some Nuk and Gerber bowls with lids.

For on the go - we had a TinyDiner so we could put finger foods on it (great once they're on more finger food and real foods).

You don't need much, and you don't need the most expensive stuff on the market. We did like bibs like the Super Bibs because they were long and easy to wash.

When I worked with twins I was introduced to this cool baby gadget. Also if you make your own baby food Ikea makes really inexpensive ice trays with bigger wells than your average ice cube tray. Might be a seasonal item.

I just started my second on solids and all I use are the rubber tipped spoons and small plastic (BPA free) containers. When she starts eating more and trying to self feed I will put food directly on her highchair tray for her and I will use a plastic divided plate to spoon feed her from. Once she stops throwing stuff around, I will just give her the same plates we use. I never got "toddler" plates, etc.. for my oldest b/c I simply don't have tons of storage room.

For sippy cups I recommend buying just one at a time and seeing what your DC prefers. At first my oldest preferred the cheap plastic travel sippy cups.

beaba sppons

For some reason, DS thought they were they greatest thing ever. He liked to chew on them during teething as well

One of those mini cuisinarts if you don't already have one. You don't need something specific for baby food.

Feeding solids to my six-month DD now for a couple of weeks. Munchkin bowls and spoons work great. Also like the bumpkins bibs -a bit expensive but only need a couple. We just started introducing her to cup and one of those transitional sippy cups. She just plays with now. We also keep a soft washcloth on the ready for clean-up after each meal. Enjoy!
