Stupid question - does heartburn always feel like a burning sensation?

Anonymous
I'm 26 weeks, and in the past week, I've noticed that about 2 hours after I eat, I get a feeling like there's something in my throat. I'm sure it's from my stomach starting to get pushed up by my uterus, but don't know if this would qualify as heartburn or something else. Has anyone else had this sensation? There's no burning, just a feeling like a lump almost. Is there anything I can do to minimize this? It seems to happen whether I eat a lot at once or just a little bit.

Yes, heartburn/indigestion can feel like what you're feeling. But if you're worried about it being something else, call your dr.

Try eating smaller meals and try not to drink too much fluid while you are eating (but make sure you get plenty fluid otherwise). Avoid laying down for awhile after you eat. And I'm also a fan of Tums smoothies.

Thanks. I'm not really worried about it being something else - I feel like it's a normal thing given the way our insides get pushed around. I never lay down after eating, but will try smaller meals if I can.

it depends on what you eat. If it's saucy in any way, think, pizza, you will feel the burning sensation. If it's a salad or something like that, it will be similar to that lump in the throat.

Agreed with pp, small meals.

This does sound like heartburn, but you could also be overfull, esp. if you drink a lot of water, which I do. So if I eat a big meal or even something salty or spicy, I end up drinking a lot of water and then feel kind of gross and overfull.

I do tend to drink water while I'm eating. I'll start with cutting that out and see if it helps. I generally don't eat very big meals to begin with, so if I make them any smaller, I know I'll still be hungry.

yup, sounds like heartburn to me (I have that feeling right now, actually...) I was a big fan of the Tums Smoothies too, but if it is really uncomfortable ask your doc if you can take something stronger -mine has upgraded me to Pepcid AC which works very well (although I try not to take it too much)

I'm 25 weeks and I think I'm having this too. It doesn't burn but it feels like there's something stuck in my throat (but down further--right between my breasts or just above). It's odd though. For me, it doesn't seem to be dependent on what or how much I eat. I get it sometimes after just drinking a few sips of water.

18:55, yes, that's exactly what I'm having! I picked up some dried papaya today, since papaya is supposed to help with heartburn, and it has helped some. I'm reluctant to take Tums (read something about the excess metals in them being unnecessary), so for now, the papaya will do.

Glad the papaya is helping! My midwife, who generally says stay clear from OTC meds, says that Tums is perfectly safe, in case you need something stronger.

Tums is mostly just calcium carbonate, so it's close to natural OP, what you're describing sounds like reflux. If you're like me, the sphincter between your stomach and esophagus may relax too much, causing food and fluids to backflow into your throat. Bland foods help reduce the burning, but the only things I've found that reduce the backflow sensation are small meals and sleeping propped up. My heartburn got too severe so I finally gave in and tried Zantac at my doctor's suggestion, which also seems to help a little. Good luck.
