We're considering a house rental in Bayside Resort in Fenwick Island Delaware. Has anyone stayed there and how was it? We'll have three small kids with us. Thanks!
We drove to it to check it out and I was shocked at how far away it is --- it's a long drive with traffic to Fenwick. I'd only stay there if the house is free or dirt cheap. I wouldn't pay more than $400-500 for a week, otherwise it's worth it to pay more and stay closer IMHO.
Stay closer where? Fenwick is right next to Bethany and not fa from Ocean City. If you want the delaware beaches. w/o traffic it is 3 hours and traffic can add at least another hour or 2.
We stayed there last year and it was nice for the kids. The resort has a few different pools, splash playgrounds for the kids, as well as a carousel and playground in the middle of the grounds. It is a little remote though from anything else - you will need to drive to the grocery store, restaurants and beaches (probably about a ten minute drive but parking was ok and not a big hassle). The resort itself is pretty new and very quiet - not really my cup of tea but a nice place for little kids to run around.

We stayed in a similar, but smaller, place right near there last year with another family (three small kids in all) and drove through Bayside. It was far from the beach, about 5 miles, and the closest beach access was the park in Fenwick, which was annoying and has very long lines. On the other hand, the pool and playground that we had access to were invaluable with three small kids. This year, we stayed in Bethany, much closer to the Beach, at a single family house. We regretted the move greatly. We really missed the playground and pool, and we still had to drive to the beach. Is there a shuttle from Bayside? If so, I would say it is a no-brainer. If not, I would probably still do it and just drive to Bethany Beach instead of waiting in the line at Fenwick next time.
Although we are all big travellers who generally prefer non-resort-type travel (we took our 3-year-old to rustic inland Thailand, and they have taken their kids to many places in Latin America and Africa), the Delaware Beaches just don't have that flavor, so you might as well make it easy for the small kids, and playgrounds and kiddie pools do just that. |
Thanks for the feedback!
"Stay closer" means stay closer to the beach. Bayside is NOT near the beach --- it's several miles away, and there will be traffic to/from Fenwick Beach (there's really only one way in and one way out). You will need to go to the public beach and pay for parking (you won't find parking in the neighborhoods with the beach houses right on the beach in Fenwick). The public beach/park is nice, but you will deal with traffic getting in and out. Again, I would stay far out and deal with the hassle but only if the house is super cheap. I wouldn't pay $1000+ to stay that far away. And FWIW, it's not near Bethany (the name of the development --- and it's a development, not a resort) is a misnomer.

Sounds like vacation clubs. Perhaps, it was a great idea. I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
