I am delivering with Dr. Newman at Sibley Hospital on 8/15. I am interviewing a few doulas - Christina Morgan, Lauren Doyle and Mari Stutzman Smith. I would love to hear from anyone who has had experience with any of these doulas (or if you are a doula and available at the time of my birth, I would love to be in touch).
Finally, if anyone has tips on best questions to ask during a doula interview, I would appreciate advice there as well. I am hoping for a natural birth but want to be supported if I opt for an epidural. Thank you! Olivia |
I don't have any experience with those doulas. I've heard that the training required to become a registered/certified doula is minimal, so it's important to ask what additional training they have, how many births they have attended, etc. I also asked the motivation for becoming a doula (several I interviewed are doulas working on becoming licensed midwives, or former midwives from foreign countries). It's also good to know the practical things -- when do they arrive (we wanted them to arrive well before we went to the hospital), what their schedule of visits is, when services they do and do not provide, etc. Best of luck! |
it's great you are interviewing multiple doulas. that's the best way to find one who is really a good match!
i am a doula and this is my favorite list of questions for doulas. i think it's very comprehensive and touches on a lot of important things. http://www.childbirthconnection.org/pdfs/doula.pdf i think asking the question "what kind of support do you offer to women who choose an epidural?" or "how do you feel about epidurals" should help you figure out who is going to be supportive of whatever type of pain relief you choose. best of luck in finding a great doula and hope you and your baby have a very happy, healthy birth. |
14:05, what doula did you select and why (if you feel comfortable disclosing). Im about to begin my search for a doula. Also, where did you find the doulas you interviewed? Im also delivering at Sibley. |
We interviewed a bunch of doulas and ultimately went with Emma Keeton (birthwithemma@hotmail.com). She was extremely knowledgeable, kind, and compassionate, and has tons of experience -- ultimately, we went with her because we were very comfortable with her. She is British and was a midwife in England before moving here, and her level of knowledge made us very comfortable. Good luck! |
i sent emma an email over a month ago and never heard back. not responsive, at least to an early dec birth. |
Thanks! I just sent her an email. |
