| Those hats are pretty creepy and dangerous... Not to mention that it forces a baby to suck on a pacifier. Awful. |

| In their defense, there have been times - after the 600th time replacing it - that I've wished I could tie the pacifier to the baby so he could get it back himself. Obviously, I would never do so (or use this hat), but I can imagine the "logic" that went into its creation. |

| My guess is that of those 35, at least 1/2 were shower gifts from childless people, leading the mother to say "Oh, how lovely" while shuddering internally, and then either throwing it out, or if they're cheap like me, cutting off the straps which I assume would result in a slightly cute, perfectly safe, hat. |

A valid question: do new things like this have to be tested before they hit the market? Because, uh, yeah. I can't fathom any parent actually using this on their child, and I REALLY cannot imagine any regulatory agent taking a look at this and saying "gee, seems safe enough to me!"

The regulatory agency with jurisdiction over this type of product is the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the ones that issued the recall on this. The CPSC doesn't test items in advance of products going into the market. Pre-market testing is the manufacturer's responsibility, not the government's. The CPSC sets the regulations that the manufacturers need to meet. Now, as to what was going through the heads/minds of the people who came up with this product... well, that's another issue. |
