I'm starting to think about a potential pediatrician for after the baby comes. I go to GW for by OB-GYN care and have loved it. Does anyone know if they have a pediatrics department? I can't seem to find any information online. If they don't have a pediatrics department, who does the baby exam in the hospital?
I've been looking at some of the other practices in the downtown area. (I live in DC and suburban practices aren't really possible, as I don't have a car.) Pullman & Ariza said it was $80 to come meet with a doctor and find out about their policies, which I found to be a bit over-the-top. The 2121 K Street practice isn't accepting new patients. What do people think about Dr. Michelle Barnes-Marshall (on M St., solo practitioner)? Are there any doctors in the downtown area who take insurance and are recommended? Thanks in advance for your help! |
We use Dr. Barnes (Marshall) and she is awesome. She used to be part of a Capitol Hill practice and split off into a solo practice. We thought that might be trouble but we had an infant with 7 ear infections in 4-5 months and she always took us the day we called. We've talked to her at night and on a Sunday. And she caught something during our DD's first appt that Sibley's in-house pedatrician missed post-birth. I can't say enough good things about her. She doesn't push medicine, she knows when a specialist is needed (ENT, for example), she's pro-vaccine, and she always spends at least 30 minutes with us. |
sorry - PP here - we didn't do any pre-birth visits. We have good friends with similar values to ours who use Dr. Barnes and we took the recommendation. We figured if at the first appt we didn't like her or if our DD had some sort of special need, then we would find someone else. Fortunately, we loved her and kept her! Good luck. |
To address your earlier question, the hospital at GWU has a pediatrics department and high-level NICU (I found the docs and nurses to be excellent when I had my son 18 mos. ago) and they will do all the supervision of your newborn upon birth; the MFA - the setting in which GW's docs and students see patients in a clinical setting, does not have a peds department as far as I am aware. |
2141 are the docs associated with GW. Children's Ped & Assoc. 202-833-4543
Is that what you meant by 2121 K St? I have a 3 month old and we had no problem getting in? Love them. They recently expanded to another floor. Wait times have improved a lot (I have an older child there as well from day 1) |
Thank you all for your very helpful reply. I *did* mean 2141 K Street -- I called yesterday and they are no longer accepting new patients, though they mentioned that they are expanding and will probably allow for new patients over the summer. You got in just in time! Do you like the practice? I've heard very good things about several doctors in the practice. |
They do not have a pediatric clinic that sees patients for well visits etc like a doctor's office. It came up in the nursery when I delivered there in December. |
