nannies/daycare

what are the general going rates for daycare/nanny in the DC area?

i live in siver spring but work in DC. trying to figure out if its worth it to work part time (i'd only be making about $500 a week). first time mom due in september and have no clue where to start. any recommended websites or services to find a nanny? i'm not super keen on putting baby in daycare super early, which i why i think i'm leaning more toward the nanny route, but it have to make monetary sense....any info would be appreciated.

We've just been looking at daycares and were happy to get one at $310 per week ($350 wasn't uncommon at the daycare centers in Arlington). We were also lucky to get a slot for January--most places were booked until September 2012. You might be able to find a better rate at an in-home daycare I have heard. A nanny would be more expensive.

Of course, there's also the question of whether you can find a provider that you can use part time. That might require an in-home provider or a nanny rather than a daycare center.

We found our nanny through DCUM. We pay $375/week for a share (so the nanny makes $750/week) for 9.5 hours per day, 5 days per week. If you post in the nanny forum you might get some responses for rates for a single child.

How much more do you pay in employment taxes?

We use an in-home daycare in Annandale $190/month. I'm thinking of cutting my hours to part time and it is justifiable to keep the same daycare even at the full time rate.

PP here , $190/week

About $1400 a month for center-based infant care in Silver Spring, but you may be too late to get on waiting lists for centers. Also, part-time is not an option at my center.

Are you on any lists now? If not you may be out of luck for a center anyway.

Every daycare I have looked at only has the full-time option. I'm in DC, so it may be more expensive, but we've generally found them to be in the $1500-$2000 range/month. Nanny may be the way to go, if you can do a share with another family that needs part-time care. Good luck!

We pay $425 a week for our nanny share, plus taxes and whatnot. I only work part time but we had to pay for pretty much full time in order to find the right situation. I barely take home anything after paying for the nanny but I'm staying active in my career and keeping my skills and connections current. I knew if I quit it would be tough to break back in.

I also live in MD and used a website called LOCATE through the Maryland Children's Network. Call the number on this website, give them some info about where you live/what kind of situation you're looking for, and they'll give you a list of licensed day care centers/in home providers in your area. They were a big help to me. Once we found someone we liked, we were then able to request all of their inspection records for the past 3 years to make sure there wasn't anything sketchy. You should definitely be able to find an affordable option that is also flexible. Hope this helps.

An average rate for nannies in the DC area is $12-$18/hour depending on experience, duties and job requirements.

I am surprised people have found centers that are in the 300s a week. Everything I look at is mid 400s (in Arlington).

I pay $315 per week for infant care in Silver Spring at smaller day care center. The price drops once DD is a toddler to $295 per week.

In the non-downtown part of SS, there are few centers and most in home care seemed to range from about $250 to $300 a week (for FT). I would think that you will have an easier time finding something PT if you do the inhome daycare route or else a nanny share. There's a forum on here for finding nannyshare matches and the SS area (downtown mostly) normally has a good amt of posts by people looking to share their nanny.
