Anyone else have a fantastic time at the egg roll this morning? Tips for next year?

We had the best time this morning at the White House egg roll! Not bragging, just want to see if anyone has tips to share for next year, especially since the other egg roll threads were so negative. I was really expecting it to be miserable based on the posts here. We had the 7:30-9:30 slot, which required us to get up super early, but the line was really fast, the weather was perfect, and we got home in time for me to go to work in the afternoon. My 3.5yo and 19mo both loved it and were completely exhausted when we got home (long naps!). We didn't bring a stroller despite everyone's recommendations here and were so glad we didn't. Put the toddler in an Ergo and the 3.5yo wouldn't have sat down if we wanted her to. I would definitely recommend going with as little stuff as possible. We just threw a couple of diapers in the Ergo pocket and we were all set. So nice not to have to lug stuff around. They make you throw out your food and drinks at the gate anyway and there were free drinks and fruit inside.

Definitely hit the lines for the things you want to do first. We only got to a few of the activities and could have used two more hours I think. They stop even letting you in the lines a half hour or so before your slot ends, so plan accordingly so you don't have a facepaint related meltdown like we did today

Anyway...feedback from anyone else? Fun? Tips on what to do or what not to do?

Its a year away. Do you really want tips now?

Don't go if you have a ticket for any time later than 7:30 am.

The only people who say it was anything less than miserable went at 7:30. Last year (and this year, according to friends), the wait in the middle of the day was 2 hours.

What makes you so sure you're going to get tickets next year, OP?

9 out of 10 people say it was a miserable experience

Yeah! How dare you have fun, OP! Join the miserable shrew brigade like the rest of us, you peppy little twit!

We didn't even apply this year, since the kids are a little young, but I plan on applying next year when they're 3 (twins) and I'm glad to hear the tips. Was there anything else they confiscated at the gate? Also, what was your favorite thing there?

We were the last group at 4:15pm. We had the absolute best time. My 17 month old loved it. He waited in line with everyone else and even participated in the Egg Roll. So glad I didn't listen to all the negative Nancys on this site. We too did not take a stroller, had no trouble getting water and fruit. Will def try for tickets next year again.

Like the OP, we got in at 7.30 am, and had the BEST time. We didn't do any of the planned activities - just took pictures, had the kids run around (one is 3 and the other 1), seeing the sights, people and cartoon-character watching, explaining things to them. We absolutely loved it, and our older one loves the wooden egg.

One of our kids' teachers went with her daughter at noon, and had the WORST time - waited for a long time in line, got sunburned, had to wait forever for activities, the whole shebang. So it depends.

We took a stroller and were glad for it.

"Miserable shrew brigade"????? Really, PP - you don't sound terribly lovely yourself. I don't understand why you and others here bash anyone who has commented that this event isn't necessarily all it is cracked up to be. I would have much rather known the potential for awful waits and insane crowds before I went last year and waited 2 hours in line with two kids. I'm glad some people enjoy themselves at the egg hunt, but a lot of it comes down to luck/timing...

We were in the 4:20 entry group--last entrance of the day--and had a BLAST! It was hot but very short lines and lots of fun activities for the kids. Can't wait for next year!

We were in the 9:40 group and had a FANTASTIC time! The weather was perfect and the line to get in was not a big deal at all. I have a 2y/o and a 5 y/o and will apply again next year just to see if we can go again. The craft tables were favored by my children as well as the Whole Foods fruit. Definitely a wonderful experience.

Yeah, they should wait a year to offer tips once they've forgotten everything, rather than share tips when the event is fresh in their minds. Duh!

OP back. One of the ways I use DCUM is by searching for past threads on a topic. Indeed I did this for the egg roll this year and found a lot of negative comments. But if so many people go every year, surely it couldn't have been all bad. So we wet anyway and had a blast and thought we'd share some tips for how to make the most of it. Thanks to those of you who shared. And of course I don't know if I'll get tickets next year...but hopefully this thread will be helpful to someone who does.

Sigh. I guess I'm a miserable shrew. I avoid shit like that like the plague. But glad that other people had fun!

We took our one year old in the 7:30am and had a great time. We did take a stroller, and we were grateful, but I also wish we'd brought our Ergo as she's not walking yet. She LOVED the characters.

I will say that I was very annoyed that they threw away her puffs and snacks before I even noticed (she's not completely on table foods b/c of some tone issues ) so it's questionable whether or not she'd be able to eat whatever snacks they provided. I also had to drink her soymilk to prove that it was just soymilk. I understand the need for security, but a little consideration for children on special diets or food allergies would be nice. We didn't stay at the egg roll long in case she started to get hungry. My advice - put a small ziploc bag of cheerios in my pants pocket.
