Baby pooping during naps

Anonymous
My six month old daughter has just started pooping during naps and waking herself up, or not wanting to go back to sleep because she has poop in her diaper (completely understandable). usually one nap a day is cut short by a poop. Anyone else have this problem? She just started solids a couple weeks back; I'm wondering if her body is adjusting? She used to poop every other day but now, on solids, poops every day, sometimes twice. Trying to get her to poop before naps so she doesn't wake up tired and cranky - anyone have any suggestions on how to avoid this problem?

Hey, when the kids needs to take a dump, the kid is going to dump.

Mine all woke themselves up as well, but would you want to sleep with a fresh load in your pants...

Well, I know - but it's strange that this turned into a sudden habit...and if there's any way for me to avoid a cranky, tired baby, I'd like suggestions.

pooping isn't a "habit." no pun intended, but i doubt it will become a regular thing -- just seems like it. i don't think there's a way to avoid this problem unless there's something in her diet that you're giving her before she naps/poops.

Everybody poops!

You could experiment with moving the timing of meals or of naps. Also, it's possible that as her system adjusts to solids she'll stop pooping in her sleep - I know with my 1 yo, he barely pees and never poops while asleep, nap or nighttime, but within 15 minutes of being awake and upright he has fully relieved himself.

How on earth can you get a baby to poop at your convenience? Would you like it if you had to poop at someone else's convenience? That would suck big time.

I would suggest either shifting her meals, or shifting her nap, like 21:58 just suggested. You could also keep a journal for a few days to learn how long it is after a meal that she poops. Then work with her body.

Wow, how sad that you think that your child being cranky and tired is simply an "inconvenience" for you. Yeah, it's no fun for me to have a cranky baby, but it's worse being the cranky baby, don't you think? Sorry, I actually care whether my baby is happy for her sake and not mine. Please spend your next Saturday night doing something besides trying to make parents feel bad.

Thanks to the PP for the info about the system adjusting - if this keeps up I will see if I can push her nap time back, or feed her a little earlier or later.

OP here, that is a very good idea. I haven't kept track of those things since she was a newborn, it's a good idea.

This was precisely my point.

And how dare you say that I need to do something else with my Saturday night. Making parents feel bad on a Saturday night is what I do. I avoid my husband and my children just so I can make parents hopping mad. Apparently I'm really good at it.

OP- when my DD started solids she did this for like two weeks. Then stopped. I just pushed her nap back 30 min.

Magic!

DS is 21-months and has pooped during naps and at night since forever. Hoping that one day it changes...
