So my DH and I are going away for the first time (our DD will be a little over 4 months old) for a few days. I am having some issues with leaving our DD but know that my DH and I need a little time away together and alone. My problem is that I've been BFing and pumping all along but since we'll be away I'll pump the entire time and I hate to just throw away all of that milk. Any suggestions on what to do with the milk vs. just dumping?
Many thanks! |
| Is there some reason why you can't save it? (I don't mean to sound snotty when I say that at all) I always refrigerate and then transport with dry ice, which is pretty readily available at package stores (don't know where you'll be). It would be a shame to waste so much milk. It's hard to leave but you're right to do so now. We went away when our daughter was 4 months and it was fine...fast forward a year and we just had to cancel a trip due to her insane separation anxiety. Take advantage while you can! |
| Thanks! I'll have to check into getting some dry ice. We'll be in the Bahamas so hopefully it won't be too difficult to come by. Also, I guess I will need a cooler? Not too sure since I've never had to save more than a few hours worth. |

My first thought was - why not send it back? Doesn't DHL ship dry ice items without a lot of hassle? You may not want to send back every single pumping session, but a few bottles here and there should keep your baby stocked until you return.
On a side note, make sure the outlets in the Bahamas are the same as the plug on your pump. |
| Check the price/availability of dry ice and shipping before you go (everything costs more on islands!) If you don't really *need* the milk (e.g., you already have a stockpile at home) it may not be worth the hassle/expense. |
| 23:22 here again - if you do decide to ship it back, any old Styrofoam cooler should do, just get the shipper to tape it up really well. |
| Perfect! Thanks everyone. |
| Who's taking care of the baby while you're gone? |
| Her nanny. |

I have a similar question. We're heading to Aruba in a month for 5 days away from our then 6-month old. Does anyone know if dry ice is available? If not, would bags of ice work for transport in a cooler (knowing I'll have to empty them at security, and then find some ice to refill them)?
I definitely don't want to pump and dump, and we should have a fridge in our room, so the only real issue is getting the milk back home. |
| I'm not sure about the availability of dry ice in either Bermuda or Aruba, however, as long as you are able to keep your milk refigerated once you pump (which shouldn't be a problem in either place) then all you need to do is keep it cool from the time you leave your hotel till you return home. I think this could be easily accomplished using ice as the PP suggested. And yes, you may need to dump the ice on once side of security and get more on the other side ... but then again, you may not! Good luck ladies and congrats for your dedication! |
