Hep A vaccine

Just wondering if anyone is postponing the Hep A vaccine until their dc is two as Dr. Sears suggests? If so, what shots did you dc get at the 12 month check up? Thank you

We have our son's 12-month checkup next week, and I've been thinking about this and plan to postpone the Hep A or not get it at all. He's gotten all the other shots on schedule, but I got Dr. Sears's book because I was concerned about the 2 live-virus vaccines at once (MMR and chicken pox). I read what he says about Hep A, and just don't think it's necessary. I got a Hep A vac before I went to Costa Rica on my honeymoon--at age 39. And I was fine before (and after) that. My mom did get Hep A about 15 years ago (from bad/unsanitary shellfish, we think), but I just think as he says, it's harmless in an infant or child, and it's not needed for someone so young. I've contacted the ped's office about spacing out the chicken pox and MMR vaccines and they are okay with that, so I think I'll do that too, after talking to our ped.

I just took my DS in for his 2 year well check...he had somehow missed the 2nd Hep A vaccine. I told the Dr. I would rather delay that one and the dr said that was totally fine and that he personally had issues giving that vaccine to infants anyways unless they were travelling. BTW, it's not a mandatory vaccine.

DS just got the Hep A shot at his 18-month check-up. It was the only vaccine he received at his 18-month. Our physician did not push the vaccine but did recommend if traveling to certain countries, eating certain fresh foods, etc...... he left it completely up to us. We do travel a lot and although we do not have any immediate plans to travel to countries associated with Hep A, we decided we would be more comfortable knowing he had the vaccine given the amount of international travel we do experience and the exposure we have to diverse populations / different foods, etc. There is also an influx of produce, etc from some of these countries and we do try to eat a lot of fresh foods.......our physician noted that due to the increase in food importation, some do feel their is an increased risk of Hep A. I also think the increase in immigration might have some effect on the incidence. It really comes down to what you are most comfortable with and whether you believe in the risk / benefits associated with vaccines. I'm a firm believer in modern medicine/ vaccines!
Good luck with your decision!

Some parts of the US are also higher risk for Hep A--when we told our NOVA pediatrician we were moving to Arizona he suggested we get it, and the pediatricians out there strongly recommended it as well. This was at ~18 mos for us.

Which countries for travel would this be useful?

Mostly developing countries. My DH and I got boosters when we went to Vietnam and Tanzania (seperate trips).

OP here. . .thanks to all who replied. My question is this. . .I want to delay Hep A and therefore, the other two shots ds needs are MMR and chickenpox. I want to separate MMR. What are my options? Should I do chicken pox separately? Then perhaps measels? For those that delayed 12 shots. . . what did you give your dc? Thanks
