My DC is doing a project on the Philippines - he has to bring a dish from the Philippines. Since there are several vegetarians in the class, I assume it should be veg. Anyone know a kid friendly dish without meat from the Philippines? All of the recipes I have require at least a little meat or fish sauce or something like that (I think it is a very meat oriented cuisine). Thanks!
PS - I don't deep fry - so please don't give me anything that needs to be deep fried. |
You can find vegetarian fish sauce at most Asian grocers (H-mart carries it).
You'll be hard-pressed, though...food from the Philippines is not known for being vegetarian or healthy ![]() Try some pancit (it's like lo mein or yaki soba, sort of) or fresh (not fried) lumpia. If you go with fresh lumpia, though, you'll probably have to make the the day of, since they don't keep well in the fridge (the wrappers dry out). As an alternative, you could make a dessert like suman (sweet rice wrapped in banana leaves), which you can make the night before if you really need to. |
I make vegetarian Lumpia (unfried too). Put rice and mixed veggies into the wrapper, and serve fresh or lightly fried. It's good, especially if you have the Lumpia sauce to go with it.
ALso, I love Turon - fried (not deep) plantain bananas wrapped in Lumpia wrappers. And of course you can make pancit w/o meat. |
