early riser transitioning to 1 nap?

If you have an early bird for a child who has made the transition to one nap, I'd love some advice. Our son, who is 16 months old, is up very early - 5-5:30am most days. I think he's about ready to transition to one nap because the afternoon nap is a bear -- he just fights going to sleep. So I think I'm going to push the morning nap back, since that's the nap that he reliably takes. On Saturday I put him down at 10am and he slept until NOON. But then he wouldn't nap at all in the afternoon and was a complete crazy man. So I think I need to either push it even later in the morning, or stick with 2 naps for now. What should I do?? If you have transitioned your early bird, how do you keep them up until 11am?? It feels like torture for a little one to go from waking at 5/5:30 and napping at 9am to napping at 11am. I'd love to hear success stories and just general advice. Thanks!

We're going through the same thing @ 16 mos. My DS doesn't wake up quite as early as yours -- more like 6 - 6:30 -- but it's still a bear keeping him up till 11. Then, his naps aren't always long enough (yesterday it was only 45 mionutes!) And afternoon naps are a no-go. Then he's a grouch by 6:30-7pm!

I have the best luck when I keep mornings very busy and fun -- going to the pool, for example. Then I stretch it out a little longer with a morning snack. That usually gets us pretty close to 11.

We've just gotta get those naps longer.....
