[b]Hi All,
Our nanny, who lives in our basement, has complained that it is cold down there at night. We are scared to death over the thought of bringing in a space heater. Do you guys have any recommendations on alternative heating souces? Thanks so much!! |
How much do you want to spend? You can get separate systems to heat separate portions of the house, which in the long run is most efficient.
Another alternative is to crank your heat so that the basement is reasonably comfortable, but shut the vents in the rest of the house. Those rooms will get cold, but you can then experiment with opening some of them back up to get the temp closer to what you'd like. |
You can get heating that runs underneath rugs. It is pricey but safe. There are also lots of safe space heaters. I have two oil-filled radiators that I leave on all the time. One can nicely heat a closed room. |
Tell Nanny to put on some socks and a sweater. Sheesh. |
Our basement is freezing. We bought a $50 space heater, do not let the kids touch it and turn it off when we are not there. Problem solved. |
We just bought this Honeywell Cool Touch Energy Smart space heater. Like the name implies, you can't burn yourself on it, and it has other good safety features like an automatic shutoff if it tips over. Plus its on sale right now!

Someone on DCUM a while ago mentioned a wall mounted electric wall heater with thermostat that plugs into an outlet that is safe for kids and pets called Envi. I don't know anything about the product but thought it was worth looking into for a space that I have in my house that is cold all the time.
