DS is 4 months old. For the first few months, he was in a bassinet next to our bed. A few weeks ago, he started having trouble alpeeing there. (he would wake up when we put him down, have trouble staying asleep, etc.). He is long and likes to move around so we thought he might be too big for the bassinet. We moved him to his crib and it is no better! Sometimes he'll sleep for a few hours early in the night, but not always. He will never go back in the crib after the first nursing session of the night. Out of desperation for sleep, we started bringing him into our bed at some point during the night. I never planned to co-sleep and would really like him to sleep in his room at this point. Any tips or should we just share the bed and try the crib again in a few weeks?
(sorry for typos- on my phone in between rounds of rocking DS back to sleep!) |

I'm in the same boat as you (except with a 6 month old). I co-slept with my first 2 kids for 4-5 months each time and moved them over to a crib no problem. This one (my third) is proving to be more difficult. I've resigned myself to the fact that at some point we will just need to sleep train (Ferberize or CIO or something).
But considering I had to do this at some point with my other 2 as well, I know that at some point in time I will in fact get more than 4 hours of sleep uninterrupted... |
| DH and I were in a similar situation w/ DS and none of us were sleeping all that well. Something had to change for everyone's sake! When DS turned 5 mos old we felt that he was old enough to sleep train. We also did not want it to wait much longer because we worried it would get harder as more time passed. We were unsure what method to use, so we spoke with our pedi and read the HSHC book and committed to the extinction method. The first couple nights were rough, but got soooo much better after that. About a week later, DS was sleeping GREAT in his crib. This approach is not for everyone, but it worked well for us. |

We had a routine similar to the OP until around 9 months. Put baby to bed in crib, then he got up around midnight to nurse, and spend the rest of the night in bed with us. We got tired of that routine and used the Ferber method (with great success) at 9 months.
We're expecting #2 and I think this time will do sleep training at an earlier age. We just value our rest so much! |

An excellent source for sleep training is www.mybabysleepsatnight.com
For those who are breast feeding, it may be easier to sleep train by switching to bottles at night first and then weaning so that you no longer deal with waking at night to feed. If not, you would want to talk to a lactation consultant. |
