What should I register for?

Anonymous
Hi,
I will be seven months next week with my first and my best friend is planning a shower for me next month. I think I'll go with www.diapers.com and Target. I have aquired a few items through freecycle and some items (such as a crib and car seat and stroller) new. My used items are bassinet, bouncy chair, baby bath tub, baby entertainment center (saucer) diaper genie, bottle warmer, mini food processor, and baby carrier. I think I will be getting a Medula (is that how you spell it) breast pump from my cousin who only used hers for 2 weeks.

What should I put on my registry that I don't already have but should because I will need it?

Thanks!

Here is a list I put together for a friend recently (of baby things generally, not just registry items). It may have more information than you need though.

1. Furniture and other larger items
a. Crib (consider whether you want one that will convert into a bed (will have a stationary rail and will be more expensive) or a regular one with a movable rail (note that many of those have been subject to recall recently)
b. Co-sleeper or bassinet (we like the mini version of Arm’s Reach co-sleeper)
c. Comfy chair/rocker for nursing
d. Changing table (can be just a changing pad on top of a dresser)
e. Pack-n-play (for naps, trips etc.)
f. Car seat and base (we like the Graco SnugRide, the larger convertible seat we started using later is Britax Boulevard)
g. Stroller (way too many choices to make suggestions, consider your lifestyle carefully)
h. Swing (some babies don’t like them but ours loved it)
i. High chair (you won’t need it for at least 3-4 months, we have the one by Peg Perego)
j. Bouncer (lots of varieties but most will do the job)
k. Play gym
l. Diaper bag and changing pad (traditional diaper bags may come with a changing pad already, some people use any kind of a roomy bag, e.g. one of those foldable Longchamp bags, I have one in my office if you haven’t seen one).
m. Diaper pail (we like the Diaper Champ because it takes regular trash bags, for the Diaper Genie you have to buy special bag cartridges)
2. Baby clothes and personal hygiene
a. Diapers, wipes and diaper cream
b. Onesies (I should clarify – some use this term to refer to t-shirts that snap over the diaper, others use it for one piece pajama-type outfits with feet. You will need both, plus some t-shirts that don’t snap on the bottom (they open up on the front with snaps) because they are easier on the umbilical cord stump plus easier to put on until you get the hang of the wobbly head).
c. Hats (cotton ones plus one warm hat for outside)
d. Mittens (cotton ones plus one warm set for outside)
e. Swaddling blankets (thin ones and thick ones, including Miracle Blankets or similar, there are also sleep sacks which are good after a couple of months in lieu of the swaddle)
f. Sheets for crib, co-sleeper and pack-n-play (for the crib, get the mattress cover, a couple of regular sheets and a couple of Ultimate Crib Sheets)
g. Cover for car seat for going outside (Bundle Me)
h. Tub
i. Soap
j. Hooded towels
k. Wash cloths
l. Baby scissors
m. Pacifiers
3. Safety and medical supplies
a. Video monitor
b. Thermometers (ear and rectal)
c. First aid items (baby Tylenol, Mylicon drops, saline nasal spray etc.)
4. Nursing and feeding supplies
a. Pump (I recommend Medela Pump in Style)
b. Bottles (we used Dr. Brown’s)
c. Milk bags (Medela or similar)
d. Nursing pads (I like Lansinoh ones)
e. Lanolin cream
f. Nursing pillow (Boppy or My Breast Friend, I have both)
g. Burp cloths
h. Baskets for dishwasher (for small bottle parts)
i. Sanitizing bags for microwave (Medela)
5. Other random things
a. Rattles/stuffed animals (baby won’t pay attention but fun to buy or get as gifts)
b. Toys you can clip onto stroller
c. Crib mobile (again, it will be several weeks before the baby pays attention)
d. Pacifier holders (they are little pouch things you can clip or velcro onto the diaper bag that keeps the pacifier clean and handy)

OP-

that's a really comprehensive list. i will tell you that i am due in 3 weeks and have almost none of that. we're taking the wait and see approach to buying stuff, though we have ordered a crib and dresser and gilder which will be delivered a few days after baby is born, and we have a pack and play for him to sleep in for the first few months while he is in our room. other than that, i have a few outfits and some hand-me-down blankets.

obviously you need to register for stuff because you're having a shower, which i didn't have, but don't feel like you need to get everything on the list to feel like a good mom right off the bat. your baby isn't going to suffer if you don't have a high chair the day you come home from the hospital.

I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about registering. I got very few things from my registery. People mostly bought outfits and blankets. My baby is much better dressed than I am.

Swaddle blankets and/or sleepsaks! I would register for various kinds (halo, woombie, miracle blanket, anais) to see what works best.

Diapers, Diapers, wipes, diapers......
side snap shirts with mitten cuffs
legwarmers
a couple of sleep & play type outfits
a structured carrier like the Bjorn with lumbar support (the single most used item of baby gear)
This should cover you for the first month.

you don't need much at first, and you can always get anything you're missing overnight delivered.

If I were to do it again, I'd register with one of those places that sends you ready-made meals (for you and husband). In the first few months, our sleep schedules were so off and we were so tired, we were not eating all that healthfully because cooking was the last thing we wanted to do.

That's a great and comprehensive list!! I'm going to save it for when I register in a few weeks. Also, I'm not finding out the sex of the baby so hopefully my friends/family will actually buy things off my registry that I need. . . not lots of pink/blue outfits that the baby won't wear for a few weeks/months anyway!

If you had all the stuff on that long list, where would you put it all? Seems like it would take up the whole house.

The one thing my family got new was an Ergo carrier, and it is truly wonderful.

Consider adding the book Parenting, Inc. to your registry.

The best item I put on my list were both the open and closed boppy pillows!! They both have so many great uses, though I have to say I like the full closed pillow the best. I still find uses for them today and My son is two years old. I typically like to give these as a gift now because they've been so useful to me and the reasonable price point...about $40

register for that entire list that the PP posted. even if you don't get one thing, babies r us will allow a 15% discount if you buy it for yourself once the baby is born. and they allow you to stack coupons on top of that (or at least they did when i had my son in early 2009).
