Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
DD is 7mo old and almost all the hair from the back of her head is GONE! She was born with such a full head of hair...
She sleeps on her back but during the day she's either sitting or I'm wearing her or she's on her jumperoo. When will this baby hair loss stop? She has the long shiny bangs and the back of her head is completely bald! So ugly, poor thing. I feel so sad when I wake up in the morning to get her and we have to use the lint catcher to get all the hair off the sheets. Now, the second problem: She turns her head side to side to fall asleep and sooth herself so in the morning her hair (the long parts in the top of her head) are all tangled! Serious stuff. Most mornings I get the knots off with some leave in conditioner but now that the hair is growing longer she cries and won't stop for me to detangle. Three times I had to cut the knots off. Do you think sateen sheets for a crib would work? What do I do? |
| Your third paragraph explains the second - she has a bald spot from the head rubbing she does to soothe herself. My son did it too, although at a younger age, and I remember a lot of other babies in our playgroup with little bald spots. The phase will probably pass... |
| The "back to sleep" trend leaves many infants with a bald spot and with knots in their hair. This will quickly clear up when your daughter starts sleeping on her stomach. I know as soon as my DD started stomach sleeping, both the bald spot and the knots went away very quickly. |
| She's rubbing it off when she turns her head. This will correct itself as she starts moving around, turning over, and crawling. |
| Agree - my DD has been sleeping on her stomach for awhile, but still napped in the swing and turned her head from side to side. As soon as she started napping in the crib (on her stomach) instead of the swing, the hair re-grew on the back of her head. It surprised me that even spending a couple of hours a day in the swing was messing up the hair on the back of her head but it was! |
| You may also want to try using some detangler or even olive oil in her hair before bed to prevent some of the knotting. During the day, be sure to provide more tummy time so that she is not spending even more time on her head. Good luck. |

I don't think she's necessarily rubbing it all off, especially if it's everywhere but a little bit of bangs. If it's a bald spot, especially around the part of the head that sort of juts out before the nape of the neck, that's likely from rubbing. But everywhere other than bangs is probably just her hair loss pattern.
My son was born with a pretty thick head of hair. From months 1 to 4 or so, most of it fell out, starting in the front and receding it's way back until he had just a little patch on the back of the nape of his neck. Then, to make matters worse, I snipped a bit off the back, thinking it was going to fall out anyway, and I wanted a lock for his baby book. So then he had this big chunk missing. It was pretty hot.
Anyway, I mention it because it sounds sort of the reverse of your daughter's issue. Starting at around 6 months, it started to grow back, and by about 10 months you couldn't tell at all. However, it sounds like your daughter might be on a bit latr schedule. But it does grow back, and his hair is totally normal now. |

Thanks to all for your responses.
I think I never really observed other babies, then. If it's so common like you're all saying I'll start paying more attention. OP. |
| It's very common. My son looks really cute in a hat! and little by little his hair is growing back in. |
