I am wondering whether anyone has recommendations/remedies to help with carpal tunnel syndrome. I am 35 weeks and recently developed moderate symptoms of CTS, particularly worse in the morning but numbness and tingling throughout the day. I never experienced CTS before pregnancy but according to my doctor it is not uncommon, due to the swelling and water retention. I do a lot of typing at work and have a typing pad but it is getting increasingly more painful each day. I do stretches throughout the day and put ice on my wrists at night. Anything else, besides splints I can use to alleviate the symptoms.

I had that too and got wrist supports for my keyboard and mouse pad at work. I wore splints at night b/c it seemed to be worse then. |
I had it so bad I had to be on disability the last month of my pregnancy. I lost all feeling in my hands and feet-and my wrists were so painful, you couldn't touch them. I used the wrist supports also-but it got a to point where that didn't help.
I'm not sure what else you could do-talk to your ob. I was referred to a neurologist-and had to have physical therapy. |
Have you considered acupuncture? I went last year at the onset of my problems with carpal tunnel and saw an immediate change after just a couple of treatments. |
I had horrible carpal tunnel syndrome for the last few months of my pregnancy (I was really swollen as well for the last 4 months). I wound up going to an orthopedist and getting cortizone shots in each wrist, which I should have done earlier in the pregnancy. The shots definitely helped, but I still wore splints every evening and night to bed.
The good news is that it disappeared almost immediately after delivery. So hang in there! |
GET BRACES NOW!!!
This is common, especially if you are older. A set of wrist braces will make a huge difference. You don't just need to make your wrists feel better, but you need to make sure you protect them from further strain. The braces will keep you from abusing them - opening a door the wrong way etc. Furthermore, nursing isn't easy on the wrists, either. I ended up getting a cortizone shot, which helped. It helped, but didn't cure. I hate to say this, but my wrists didn't fully recover. Ever. Kid is eight now. I take very good care of my wrists, and as a result I am pain free. However, I never stop protecting them. Sometime I still wake up to tingling. |
Don't want to scare you, but make sure you watch your blood pressure. CTS can be a symptom of pre-eclampsia. |
