I can't really tell?! My nanny is a lefty, and she can't tell either. |
We found out around 1 1/2 she was a lefty now she is 3, she uses the computer with her right hand though. |
At 6-8 months we knew DS had a strong left hand preference. I'm left handed and thought maybe he was mirroring me, but it continued up until now, at 5 he's still left handed.
At 6-8 months, we knew DD had a strong right hand preference. At 2.5 she still does. FWIW, at my son's preK I do see kids switching hands while writing, but most use one hand or the other (ages 4-5). |
I'm a lefty, DH is somewhat ambi though mostly righty, and we've noticed DD favoring her left for eating and playing at 14 mos. She does seem to switch with crayons, but I also think that's because her daycare teachers put the crayon, paint brush, etc. in her right hand when they do crafts. I guess that's still subject to change. |
DS prefered left hand for writing, drawing, bats and throwing balls, left foot for kicking. Now that he's in Kindergarten he's writing with his right hand but rights just as well and as easily with his left hand. He does seem to be right handed. He still prefers and is better at throwing, and kicking balls or sports using his left hand and feet. |
I don't remember exactly when, but i'd say def by 12 or 15 mo we saw strong preferences with both kids (#1 for RH, #2 for LH). The ped told us it didn't mean anything that early but both kids pretty consistently only chose their dominant hand (now 18 mo & 3 yrs). Our nanny is from a culture where left hand is used for the toilet, so we keep telling her it's OK if our little one uses her left hand (husband is a lefty & he's thrilled our little one appears to be)

OP here, thank you all for your informative responses so far – very informative and much appreciated. As a first time mom, I am curious mostly because my identical twin sister is left handed while I am right handed so I am bit more attuned to “lefties”. The take away I’m reading is give it a few years, and let the child chose… not a problem. ![]() |
DD, now 7 months, has been favoring her right hand ever since she learned to grab. So we have been presenting toys closer to her left hand, etc. |
