Where to shop for coat? Petite sizes ideal

Anonymous
I would appreciate some recommendations here. While I once would have known just where to go to find a moderately priced, flattering, stylish wool coat, my kid's health has been of immediate concern over the last half year or so and money has been tight for the last few years. Aesthetic matters have slipped to really low priority, and I've been wearing some pretty worn stuff. If I were to bother looking in the mirror, I don't think I'd be pleased.

So, my mom sent me $200 for a new winter coat and is urging me to direct some energy toward finding one that perks me up a little. The trouble is that although seasonal sales + careful shopping should make this possible, I'm just not motivated to go to multiple stores and try on multiple coats. Trying on is really required because... I'm kind of short (and particularly short-waisted), with rather more chest than my stubby trunk can balance gracefully. Military buttons, double-breasted styles with narrow necklines, epaulets, full skirts, and even belts are not my friends, lovely as they may look on others!

Which stores would be most worth my while given my price range and preference for petite sizes? I'm not excited by online petite offerings at Nordstrom, Lord and Taylor, and Macys, although I've found good options at all these stores in the past. I can't afford much at Anthropologie at the moment, and honestly, my mind is just drawing a blank when I try to think of other places to look. Sorry to make this more about my emotional state than fashion, but it all just seems like so much trouble and I'd appreciate help focusing my looking a little. It's not hard to find something that fits, but it is hard to find something that flatters. I care less about this than I used to, but it seems like a shame to expend scarce resources on something that won't make me feel any better.

have you tried the LL Bean store in McLean? pretty big range of styles in women's coats. i've got a friend who is pretty petite (4'5") who just bought this coat from a LL Bean outlet where she lives - http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/66113?feat=504728-GN2 - she bought it in the raspberry color because it seemed so bright and cheery. pics of her in it seem to make the coat look pretty good on her. it's just puffy and colorful enough to look stylish, fun, and cheerful and at the same time doesn't "advertise" what she calls her "midget affliction".

JCrew has a lot of winter coats in petite sizes, and they have some cute stuff right now.

I saw some nice ones at Ann Taylor this week. They have good petite options, are affordable, and look well made.

Ditto, PP ... Ann Taylor Loft has wonderful petite coats and they last for years which is a benefit. I remember hitting EVERY store known to man last year and was seriously disappointed in the selection. How 'bout instead of running from store to store, you find somewhere that has free shipping and have a selection sent home so you can try at your lesiure?

Bannana Republic or J Crew, hands down.

I know you said you didn't see anything on the Lord and Taylor website, but I'm petite and have found the best options there for coats. I boat one a few years ago at Bloomingdales, but I think they've really limited their petite offerings at this point (as have most dept stores, unfortunately). Good luck!

LL BEAN. I love their coats. Not as expensive as some of the other ones but great quality and warm.
