I'm doing it. I am going to make going to the gym a part of my routine. There is a gym in my building and I plan to go in the morning before work. Oddly, I am more concerned about the logistics of before and after the work out. I know I will need a duffle that will carry shower stuff, shower shoes and my work clothes. And a lock for a locker?
Does anybody have any suggestions for a good duffle and shoes and anything else I will need? Any advice on how to make this routine run smoothly? TIA |
| I think you are gearing up for excuses...just sayin'. |
Could be. But do you have any advice that might help me out anyway? |

is the gym in your work building or in your apartment building at home?
If it is at home, change in your apartment. If it is at work, pack a second tolietry kit with the products you use in the morning -- shampoo, conditioner, soap, deoderant, makeup, toothbrush/paste, contact stuff, brush, hairdryer. Also, add flipflops, towels, etc. Leave this stuff under your desk -- do not cart it back and forth. Refresh towels every couple days. Wear your sneakers into work; change into work shoes when you finish. Do you plan on running? If so, go to a running store to get fitted. If not, then just wear comfortable, well-fitting sneakers. Don't overthink this. It doesn't matter what duffel bag you use or internet recommendations for sneakers. |

I've had good luck with Nike gym bags. You want the "small duffel" size, which is big enough for all your stuff, but not so big you can't fit it on your lap on metro. It fits in most gym lockers. I keep a toiletry bag packed at all times with mini-bottles of my products. I do re-fills every other Sunday night or so while I'm packing my bag for the next day. See if you can find a garment bag like the ones that men's suits come home in. They're heavy-duty plastic and they are big enough for an outfit or two, with a zipper closure and the hanger comes out the top. They're perfect for carrying your work clothes (and after you get dressed, you can hang your towels on the hanger and let them dry in your office.) "Valet sleeve": http://tinyurl.com/2525q83 If your memory sucks, get a mini padlock with a key. if your memory's ok, you can get a combination lock at cvs for like $5. I have both - my usual lock is a combination lock, but I also keep a mini padlock and key on my keychain for the days I forget my combination lock. (if it's in my other gym bag.) that way i have no excuses. No recs for shoes because I don't know what you're planning to do. If you're a runner, check www.runnersworld.com for suggestions in their forums, or go to a dedicated running store and have them suggest something. Also, you might want to pare down your shower/makeup routine so you're not wasting a ton of time. My coworkers are used to seeing me with wet hair up in a bun and minimal makeup. Luckily in my job, I'm expected to be smart, not hot. And last, you might want to keep some extra stuff in your office (couple extra pairs of socks, deodorant, t-shirt) so you have one less excuse to skip a workout.

go to a thrift shop and buy any bag you see there. no need to go out and buy a specialty gym bag. chances are, you've got a bag in your closet already that can double as a gym bag.
if the gym is in your building, change in your apartment before going. take your work clothes, some shower stuff, and go. i'd keep a bag at work or in your car, too, with some stuff in case you can't shower at the gym before you go to work so you can at least freshen up for the office. if you're looking for shoes, you need to consider what type of activity you'll be doing at the gym. i switched to Sketcher's Shape Ups after my running shoes finally gave out on me. they work for running (obviously) and any cardio i do. but i still have yoga shoes for yoga and pilates. |
