I need a new car and I've been dreaming for Tesla for a long time while driving minivans for the last 18+ years.
Now, kids are out of the house, it's time for me to get a car I want, but I don't want to buy Tesla anymore... So, looking for suggestions Budget - up to $50k, hatchback (don't like sedans or SUVs), daily commute ~ 1 hour stop and go on I-495 |
We went full EV (not hybrid). Edmunds was helpful in reviewing models. It’s very person specific what to get, but we did Kia Niro and love it as far as value for $. |
I would go with a Toyota hybrid. No range anxiety. |
Same. Slight preference for Honda but also hybrid. |
If you can install a home charger, go full EV. Within your budget, you have several good choices but the Hyundai Ioniq 5 might be the best match for your requirements. The Volkswagen ID4 is another possibility. I know that you said no SUVs, but you still might take a look at the Chevrolet Equinox EV. it's one of the best deals out there right now with a ton of discounts (plus the federal rebate). Another possibility is a certified used Polestar 2. You can get a low mileage 2022 for around $30k. |
Agree with Jeff that EV is a great option if you're looking for a daily driver on the Beltway. The Nissan Leaf is a great hatchback - very spacious and zips around DC traffic. They've been making them for years and the quality is great.
The Polestar is nice (made by Volvo) but I was amazed to find the headroom very limited - and I'm short! Speaking of Volvos, they may be too SUV for your taste, but the EX40 (previously XC40 Recharge) and the EX30 are both small SUVs. Maybe check out the electric Minis? |
Also look at the Ford Mustang Mach-e |
Big fan of my Nissan Ariya. |
Here is a starting list. Some will be over your price point. If you really like the car look at a 1-2 year old car. There are some deals to be had. |
I love my Kia Niro. It's a great car. Everyone who has ever driven mine says it's really easy to drive. Even my Tesla-driving DH says it's an incredible value. |
Toyota Crown Signia. It’s a hybrid wagon. Great gas mileage, fun to drive, looks nice and is less than $50k. |
Agree with this. A plug-in hybrid would be a solid option. |
It only gets 39 mpg. That's awful. The Kia Niro hybrid gets 53 mpg by comparison. Toyota should be ashamed of itself. It's miles behind on green technology, yet rests on its laurels from putting out the first Prius forever ago. Shameful. |
Kia Niro acceleration sucks. Especially if you don't have the plug in version.
If you can charge at home and you don't plan on taking long trips with it, get an EV, such as the Mustang Mache. My wife loves her. If you are going to take trips with it and/or can't charge at home get a hybrid, I have a Honda Civic hybrid sport touring and really like it. Great acceleration and fuel economy. |
We call those old-people cars. I swear I never see anyone younger than 70 driving them! |
