When I was interviewing for daycare providers midway thru my pregnancy, most of the in-home daycare providers didn't really seem sure of whether they would have openings months later, and unlike the daycare centers I applied to, they didn't really take waiting lists. (I got on center waitlists at 13weeks pregnant, but even calling after the birth, all the in-home providers couldn't tell me if they'd have space since I was taking 3-months leave before I'd need it.) I think since most in-homes are small, the situation is pretty fluid - since most providers don't require more than 2 weeks to 30 days notice when families leave, it's tough to guess and openings pop up and fill quickly thru word-of-mouth. I honestly couldn't pin down our choice until my maternity leave was almost over. There were a few tense weeks as I scoured Arlington/Falls Church/Tysons wondering if I'd ever find a place with an opening, but at the last minute, a friend's provider had a slot open up. Two weeks later, two other providers that had been full called to say they would have openings the next month.
So, don't freak if you can't pin down the in-home provider - someone is bound to have an opening by time you need it!
