Hello, I’m looking for and advocate recommendation particularly for someone who is well versed in DCPS. We’ve hired someone who knew a lot on Montgomery county, MD, but not DC before and want to find someone who knows DCPS system well.
Extra points if the advocate knows schools on the Hill well. Thanks in advance. |
Is the issue more that you have specific concerns about DC schools? Are you in a charter school? Curious why your advocate isn't able to help you with current situation. |
| How old is child? |
| Op here - DC is 5 years old. I want to know if there’s an advocate who is well aware of DC specific programs (ie Strategies in DCPS) and whether DC will be a good fit etc. |
| Reviving this old thread in hope of some similar recs. Advocates and/or special ed lawyers that work well with DCPS. TIA! |
Kim Glassman (attorney) knows DCPS well and recommend advocates. |
I would not use her as your attorney |
Does strategies even exist …? I understand why you want someone with Hill/DCPS expertise but I would advise you to look more broadly to find an advocate you click with who has the approach you are looking for and a good reputation. DCPS is confusing and inconsistent for everyone - so what you need is someone familiar with the IEP process who can advocate effectively - including finding information (like whether strategies exists …) |
| What is Strategies? or if no longer in DCPS, what was it? |
| Weinfeld has many consultants and I'm pretty sure they cover DC |
Hit or miss with Weinfeld. 1 consultant we used was clearly going through something (did not realize it until too late) and was not there when we needed them. |

I agree with a responder above. Focus on finding someone you really click with and trust.
DCPS can be confusing and inconsistent across schools, so what matters most is someone who: • understands the IEP/504 process • can advocate clearly • knows how to ask the right questions and find answers when things aren’t clear I work with families across DCPS, including several Capitol Hill schools, and it really does vary school to school. Happy to share thoughts or point you in the right direction—feel free to DM. -Meg Shah, MVS Educational Services, mvsed.com |
----------------------------- The strategies program in DCPS is geared toward kids with executive functioning challenges who are usually ahead academically. I will say it not offered at every DCPS and exists in different grades at different schools. Some may have the strategies program in the lower elementary, whereas others may have it in MS. It truly depends on the school. |
That sounds pretty great! Is it just up to each individual school whether they want to offer it? Is it a class or an actual program? Do you have to qualify for it? If you have an IEP can you request to go to a school that has it? thanks |
Just want “+1” this. We worked with Weinfeld group with mixed results and would not recommend them. |
