2nd grader DS spaces out and often does not complete class assignments, though he is smart and knows how to do them. He is suspected inattentive ADHD by his teacher. His room is really messy, and he is disorganized. We are getting him tested next year. But in the meantime, could anyone recommend any good therapists for inattentive ADHD, executive functioning deficits, and organization skills? We are in Rockville, MD. Thanks all. |
What do you mean by therapists? Talk or play therapy isn't going to do much for this condition esp at this age.
Is the pediatrician willing to diagnose? Send screenings to teachers while you wait for the testing? I recommend Chesapeake Center for ADHD. |
Chesapeake Center is good for testing or for CBT therapy / EF coaching, or both? Thx |
Chesapeake does the whole suite of services for ADHD - we just have experience with their psychiatrists. But they are very good at navigating new diagnosis in young kids. That said, I do not really think how CBT is going to be shortlist of therapies for 7-8 year olds with inattentive adhd. Instead I would focus on testing, parent behavior therapy, meds, school accommodations. (The therapist who did our parent behavior therapy said she would not even consider doing any sort of talk therapy with a child 8 or younger -- and she worked at Childrens!) |
+1 Chesapeake. My 7 year olds sessions were all parent lessons, techniques, etc. |
Read some of the Russell Barkley books on ADHD. The solutions are going to involve you structuring his environment, not him getting direct EF coaching. |
