Please be nice to refs

There would be a lot less screaming if the league would find better refs who are fit and knows the game.

I once had parents scream at me to run harder and get out of the center circle more when I was working my 6th game of a tournament on a hot day to help out a desperate assignor.
Think about that next time you criticize a ref for "not trying their hardest".

Sounds like you aren't fit for the job. Put some training in.

You're right. I'm not fit to ref six games back to back.
But we do it anyway becasue it's better than having no ref at all.

This is 100% correct. I've reffed for decades, and been a ref assesor for the last few years as well.
There is no correlation between the amount of screaming, and the talent/fitness/knowledge of the refs.

And yes, it's a broken record, but there aren't nearly enough refs to go around, mainly becasue of the screamers.

Be honest too, the pay is low. If they raised the payments too current inflation levels people would fight to get on the field and officiate

Get on out there, then. You KNOW you can do it better. Let’s see you do it.

I sat in front of a guy at a game this weekend who couldn’t run the length of the field if his life depended on it. He spent the whole game booing the refs when the calls went against his team and cheering when they were in his favor. So typical.

Good luck to your child but you need to have him ask the coach who the team manager is and address issue to the team manager or the parent in charge or whoever. Our team always had a person who was responsible for keeping the peace.

At tournament they should know who to call ... security or tournament coordinator.

Anyway, you are right but you can't control every crazy parent so your child need to have tool in place.

One ref use to walk up to fans and hold up a yellow card then walk to the team manager.

Do everyone a favor and not sign up to ref six games. YOU are the problem.

And people wonder why there's a referee shortage. Just read all of the above. Parents are the worst!

Oh, and if they did raise ref fees, you same parents would be screaming about the increase in league fees

And I'm sure you would be so understanding if your kid's game was cancelled because the ref refused to do 6 games. I'm sure you would just smile and say "oh that's completely fine. I understand".

I reffed as a teen (basketball) and I was truly amazed at what grown adults would scream at me and my fellow refs during a low stakes youth game. I doubt they could have done better, but even if they could, it’s bizarre behavior. So, I agree with this reminder for adults to stop and think. But OP I will also say it was a great learning experience for me and to this day, I am a very hard person to rattle, so hopefully your kid will gain valuable experience from it in some way!

Yes! I was shocked by some behavior I witnessed at my 9 year olds rec basketball game last year. Literally the lowest stake games and the refs were high school kids.

Sorry but even if the refs are terrible and “unfit,” it’s actually still unhinged for grown adults to scream at them…. Where else in life is this ok behavior?
