HELP!!

My DH, DD and I live in a small two bedroom apartment, we are SO cramped. As DD is getting older, and we are accumulating more stuff, we are getting cramped out of our minds here.. I was wondering what organizational things work for people who live in smaller homes? We have made one HUGE trip to goodwill already, and have another one planned tomorrow (like with pickup truck FULL of things we don't use anymore) but even with things that we use all the time we just have more stuff than we have room.. Is there anyone else in this position? How do you keep organized?

Purging is a great idea. Make sure you use all of the "up" space--i.e. string a hammock net in one corner of your DD's room ceiling to hold stuffed animals, make sure your furniture does double-duty--i.e. a coffee table with storage underneath. Store things under the couch and under beds.

It does sound like you have too much stuff, period, if you are able to take a pickup truck full of stuff to goodwill. Really use a critical eye on what you truly use every day and cannot live without, and what can be gotten rid of.

Go to Ikea and check out their storage ideas.

Purge, do not even think about storage until you have purged as much as you can.
Purge, purge, purge!
I am doing that today!

I think it must be that time of year. I am in the middle of purging a TON of stuff, mainly my kid's stuff that isn't used or worn anymore..

Everytime you bring something new into your house, you have to get rid of two old things. Don't junk--papers, books, unless professional, that is what libraries are for. Rent DVD at library. Get rid of toys that children have outfrown and children do not need 100 toys, limit them.

Make sure your closets are really organized, maximizing the best use of space. I've converted both my kids closets (using basic stuff from Home Depot) into a more useable system with shelving and bins with a small space for hanging clothes. Both their beds are up higher with storage underneath (I finally found a use for the drawers that came with the train table!). Making me feel sane means keeping the majority of toys in their room. There is a small basket in the main living area and when it gets full - because stuff does migrate - I sort and return stuff to their room. Magazines have a 1 week life span (don't tell my husband) and catalogues get thrown away about as fast. Also, really pay attention to what your child plays with. I've realized the majority of their stuff they just don't use so I've donated it and am very careful with what they get as they get older. Family members are asked to please limit what they purchase for gifts and the majority comply, even skipping buying junk and just spending a fun day with them instead of purchasing another piece of junk. Win win. Good luck!

Thank you these are very helpful tips.. One question I have left... I have very few boxes/totes stuff like that right now.. What's the best way to organize stuff when I don't have a lot of places to put them.. temporarily of course, because we are going to obtain these items, but I REALLY can't handle living in this clutter anymore...

OP, we keep very little stuff. It's good that you're purging, but I've found that it's always possible to purge a little more and hardly miss what you've thrown out. You should organize your storage spaces, but you should also avoid keeping just about anything that doesn't fit in those storage spaces.
