My nieces (both young adults, not kids) are visiting me this weekend and have never been to the city. In truth, while I live here, I've never done a one day tour. They want to see the city. I'm trying to think of the best way to help them see the city in just a day.
I have zone 6 parking so thinking I would park my car on Capitol Hill and we'd metro to Smithsonian and walk from there.... the weather looks nice. Just wander around and see monuments? Stop in a museum to get lunch? What else? Will be meeting back up with family for dinner out in Virginia. |
If the weather is nice, just visit the monuments. Plot out a loop first. Pack a lunch and eat it midway. |
I would book and hop on/hop off bus or trolley tour. Much easier than having to Metro or drive around and they will see most of the monuments. And gives you the option to pop into a Smithsonian. |
See the Paris 1874 show at that NGA and have lunch there. |
My goodness, one day is not enough. I’d metro to the Smithsonian’s, first thing, and let them choose a museum and go. They could split up and meet back in the sculpture garden. |
I think you have to do a driving tour of the monuments. You stay in the car circling while they pop out for selfies. Have a bathroom strategy bc those are far and few between down there.
Then, go to the Mall, take more photos like the one where you're holding the Washington Monument in your hand. Pick a good museum for more photos. National Gallery of Art or Botanic Gardens have some stunning backdrops, maybe Air and Space if the girls are more STEM-oriented. Eat lunch at someplace that feels DC fancy like Ebbitt Grill or Le Diplomate. Pick very photogenic food (this is NOT the time to order the chili. Petit fours and glam sandwiches only!!). Walk around Capitol Hill, preferably in a spot with some nice falling leaves and brick sidewalks, holding a latte in hand. Ask the homeless to move out the doorways and take some selfies like you live there. Done! |
This! Also you can try to get them tickets to go up in the Washington monument. Some tickets are released the day before - so if you get online promptly when they're released you might be able to get them. https://www.nps.gov/wamo/planyourvisit/fees.htm |
Great idea! Park near Capitol South (still Zone 6) to see the Capitol from the outside or take a tour of the Capitol they are interested. Then head to whatever museum they are interested in. We've eaten at the cafeterias at the NMAAHC and the American History Museum for lunch a lot with visitors if we're on the Mall or we get a quick bite at Shake Shack if we end up at the Portrait Gallery. |
mall, nga, hirschorn
lunch @ museum cafe |
Snort! Be my friend? |
Definitely this. |
This is the best way to get a feel for a city where you’ve never been. You want them to know what DC is like, not a single museum. And they probably want some good photo ops, which this will provide. Lunch at Old Ebbitt Grill or NGA. |
Also about to post this! |
Go see some of the monuments (Lincoln, war memorials) before the museums open at 10 am. Then visit Nat history, Am history, air & space, and if time the NGA. |
