My IBS with diarrhea is such a nightmare. I've been suffering from it for about 8 years and have seen two different GI docs, had two colonoscopies, tried acupuncture, a homeopathic doctor, tried herbs, diet alterations, YOU NAME IT! The only thing that has helped was getting pregnant, but now that the baby is here, the IBS is back in full-swing. Has anyone out there found the magic treatment, or at least seen a fantastic gastroenterologist that gave them some relief? I cannot live with this anymore - it's embarrassing, painful, anxiety-inducing, and just plain gross.
Thanks for any advice. |
| I was going to recommend a naturapath, but you said you tried a homeopathic doctor. There is a difference though; I think homeopathy is BS, while naturapathy can be truly effective. If you are interested, his name is Paul Faust, he's in Towson. |
| Try Dr. Robynne Chutkan in Chevy Chase, MD. She's terrific. |
| My MIL suffers from this also. I'm sorry to hear that you're having a hard time with it.. It's weird, and you'd have to determine risks vs. benefits, and do your own research (because I don't know how accurate this is but she swears by it) but she says that she's read a lot about how cigarettes are supposed to make a big difference.. Like I said, I know it sounds strange, and I've never personally researched it, but that's what she's always told us. |
So she advocates smoking to help with IBS? Unbelievable. |
| Have you tried probiotics? I've heard it helps for some IBS sufferers. |
| Actually, cigarettes are proven to help those who suffer from ulcerative colitis, so even medical doctors will recommend smoking (even if they are cringing when they say it). Of course, OP has IBS not UC, but they can feel the same at times. I highly recommend the folks at GW University's Medical Faculty Associates and also Digestive Disease Consultants in Rockville. I've been to both and sent my mother in for her IBS as well. Lots of positive suggestions and ideas. |
| Have you gone GF/CF? I've heard it helps IBS sometimes. You say you did diet changes, so you probably already tried it. |
The nicotine helps, smoking does not. |
MIL has both of those things, so either her or I probably got them mixed up or something when she was telling me... My mistake.. And to the PP who said she was excusing her smoking.. no. She actually doesn't smoke. She asked for relief or doctors, this is the only thing that I'd heard. If the PP who said something about her excusing smoking by saying it helps thinks I'm trying to convince someone to pick up a pack a day habit, you're wrong. But again, sorry about the mixup. |

I was going to suggest GFCF as well (gluten free...casein/dairy free) and see if it helps. It takes 3-6 months to get gluten out of your system once you are completely GF in diet and you need to do it gradually so as not to shock your body. Dairy takes a few weeks to leave your body once your diet is CF.
Like PP I was going to ask if you tried probiotics yet. |
| Thank you all for your suggestions. I have been tested for Celiac Disease and it turned out negative, so I never have tried a gluten free diet. Maybe I should just give it a try out of desperation. Also, probiotics didn't seem to help either. |
| The great thing about trying a gluten free diet is that it (a) is not a drug and (b) is in your control. Contrary to the person who says it takes six months to get out of the system (which may be true), I think you also may see results (or not) fairly quickly. |
| Try cutting out all animal products for a month (dairy, eggs, meat, etc). If that doesn't help, you might want to try the "allergy free" diet. |
| OP, when was the last time you saw a GI? The drugs have gotten better in the last 5 years. Did they try you on asacol? |
