Dr. Laura is both a twit and a hypyocrite. Her rants against WOHM mother? Uhmm, what is she doing? SAM? No. And she's been doing this a long time. It's not as if all women that work do so by choice. Think the woman ringing up your groceries is fulfilling her desire to achieve outsde the home? Uh, yeah.
Her Ph.D. is in Physiology. Irrelevant, much like the other TV pseudo shrink, Dr. Phil. Seriousl, calling yourself Dr.FirstName is basically a warning.
Here are some examples of her hypocrisy in action: Laura started dating her current husband, Lew Bishop, while he was still married. Laura divorced her first husband after 2 years of marriage. Laura "shacked up" with Lew for nine years before they married. Laura has not spoken to her mother in 15 years. (Great "family values") Laura is estranged from her sister. And on and on.. |
| She also calls herself a "reformed feminist" and openly acknowledges past mistakes on her show. |

| Snort. When my now ex husband cheated on me one of his republican family members took it upon themselves to mail ME (not HIM) the doctor laura books on marriage and men. Because apparently, if only I had done something different, I could have saved my marriage. What books did she mail him you ask? NONE. |

What does being republican have ANYTHING to do with this conversation.
She used the "n" word to make a point. Would I have done it? no, but then again I'm not paid to be a shock-jock. She is not a racist, she was just trying to make a point! Had she been a different skin color, no one would be discussing this issue. Had she been a different skin color and called someone a CRACKER, no one would even blink an eye. Reverse racism - right? |
Her "point" had NOTHING to do with why the person called. The person called about a specific situation and needed advice on how to handle it. Dr. Laura did not help her, instead she went on an unrelated tangent. Furthermore, why would she assume that the caller wouldn't be offended by using the word in any context? So just because she is black, she watches HBO and is not offended by comics who use the word? So she really didn't make a point. Instead she made herself look racist because that is what racist (or uninformed,or ignorant) people tend to do- turn stuff around and bring up other bad choices in an attempt to make the current bad choice seem less offensive. Wrong is wrong- period. However, not being able to stick to the topic at hand without blowing up and going off topic is really telling. |

BTW, if you are in a mixed marriage, you are supposed to have thick skin and put up with THAT?
In non mixed marriages, white man white women, do white women normally hear their husbands friends talking like that? Is "DR" Laura saying that if blacks want to hang around whites, they have to listen to that word? Is she implying that all whites speak like this? |
| I agree using the n word was probably wrong.. but other than that I really don't see a whole lot of fault to what she said.. The caller asked about the n word before she started saying it so it was in context with the conversation.. I agree completely with the PP's "reverse racism" comments.. I can easily and comfortably sit here and say that she's only getting so much trouble from this because she is a white woman. |
| Regardless of her using the "n word," which was totally crass and wrong, she didn't help the woman who called in at all. Isn't that her job? |

She's not a moron, she's a talk radio host trying to sell a show by generating controversy. And I'd say based on the heated debate she generates here and throughout the country, she's doing a damn good job of it.
When Howard Stern had his radio show with Infinity Broadcasting, a significant chunk of his listeners were people who tuned in just to get offended and complain about him. It was exactly what the network intended would happen. It created buzz, which increased listenership, which increased advertising sales. Same with Dr. Laura. |
Oh really? This is "in context" of asking what to do about the problem? Caller: Is it OK to say that word? Is it ever OK to say that word? Dr. Laura: It depends how it's said. Black guys talking to each other seem to think it's ok. Caller: But you're not black, they're not black, my husband is white. Dr. Laura Oh, I see, so a word is restricted to race. Got it. Can't do much about that. [Me:...but you were the one who brought it up, so why are you now trying to flip it around?] Caller: I can't believe someone like you is on the radio spewing out the n***** word, and I hope everybody heard it. Dr. Laura: I didn't spew out the n***** word! [Me: You are a liar] Caller: You said "n*****, n*****, n*****" and I hope everybody heard it. Dr Laura: Yes they did, and I'll say it again: n*****, n*****, n***** is what you hear on HBO. [Me: Why would you say it again? That's really revealing] Later on... Dr. Laura: If you're that hypersensitive about color and don't have a sense of humor, don't marry outside of your race. She's getting "in so much trouble" because her logic is flawed and she's an idiot. Being an idiot, gets people in trouble. Just as if a man decided to refer to women as bitches and say that he does so because he's heard other women calling each other bitches. Therefore all women must think it's okay to do so...right? So women, by default, it's okay to call you bitches because you must agree with that word. Will anyone agree with me and say that I have a "point". |

I think the concept of reverse racism is usually false.
Racism is all tied up with discrimination and history. Just saying that a word isn't appropriate for white people to say doesn't make it racism. I think non-white people can have bigoted opinions or prejudices about white people, sure, but that doesn't make it racism. White people are still by FAR the privileged class in our society. Calling something reverse racism is just a way for white people to dismiss the legitimate negative feelings of non-whites for the way our society is still set up. And the fact that people think that just because we elected a black president makes all the racism go away is just ridiculous. You only have to look at the viciously racist reactions that a not insignificant percentage of the population have had to Obama to understand that's not true. For the record, I don't like the N word when anyone says it but frankly, as a white person, it's not my decision to say that black people shouldn't be offended if white people use it if they use it themselves. |
| 13:05 & 13:20 make good points. I can't believe that there are some people who don't really have a problem with Dr. Laura's comments. Just because Dr. Laura has heard Black people use the N word on HBO doesn't mean it's acceptable. I find the word offensive in any context. Further, what is even more disturbing is the fact that Dr. Laura told the woman she shouldn't have married outside of her race if she is sensitive about these things. What a telling comment. If I were White, I'd be outraged that a member of my race is implying that this is what you have to put up with if you choose to marry a White person. |
| And if you don't like Obama, it's only because you're a RACIST!!!! Guess I'm a racist.... |
