Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
New sibling scheduled to arrive in oh, 28 days. I am wondering if my two boys, ages 4.25 and 2.25, would benefit from having their own "babies" to care for. They don't have any existing dolls but do have a great deal of affection for their stuffed animals. I'm interested in hearing from other parents whether the older siblings seemed to enjoy having a baby to take care of so they could participate without, you know, actually participating. (Clearly we didn't try this when our second arrived - those two were under 2 years apart, but now the age spread is a bit more significant.)
We "reintroduced" my 3.5 yr dd to her doll babies before her brother was born, and she had no interest.
My mother in law actually had a baby doll specific to this purpose.. only she introduced the baby to her boys shortly before a new baby would arrive, explained the proper way to hold, feed, and treat a baby. She said it worked really well.
My son wanted nothing to do with the 'baby' doll. We took him to a sibling prep class and they handed them out...he's a 100% car and truck man. Lil' bro is the same way. They curl up in bed to a dump truck.

I remember waiting on the front porch with my babysitter for my parents to arrive home with my new brother. I was three and half. When mom and dad pulled into the driveway and got out of the car, they BOTH had a swaddled baby in their arms! One was my new brother and one was a doll for me-- my own baby. I remember it so clearly and it was so wonderful.
I was visiting my sister and her newborn, and we sat down on the sofa together so my sister could nurse the baby. Her two year old son sat down next to her, lifted up his own shirt, and nonchalantly placed a doll on his chest to nurse it. It was all we could do not to burst out laughing. So yes, I think their own baby might be a nice idea. |
My sister's son did the same thing only it was his dump truck that got nursed!
My DS was 4 1/2 and his favorite stuffed animal worked just fine.
