When does it start to cool down in DC?

Anonymous
My DD and I are trapped inside most of the day. I've taken her to the indoor options but we are tired of it. My DD wants so badly to play outside. When does it start to get cooler?

I feel like it "is" cooler these days after that horrid hot streak.

But anyway, these first few weeks of August are traditionally the worst in this area as far as heat and humidity. We'll start seeing more tolerable days at the end of August, and we'll start getting cool mornings in September. By mid-September, there will often (not always) be crisp days in the low 80s with no humidity. Then it seems to turn rapidly and get chilly.

Try going out early in the mornings and later in the evenings after dinner. But even this past weekend was beautiful at mid-day if you could stay in the shade. Parks with lots of tree cover are gorgeous right now.

We usually get some 60-70 degree weather starting in September, but mixed with some 80's and 90's still. It can be in the 80's here on Halloween, or in the 60's/50's.

I grew up in Maine, and have been living in this area for about 5 years now.. I had to chuckle at a PP's comment about the "crisp days in the 80's" But I face the same problem.. I get so tired of all the indoor things to do, and just driving there is unbearable if your car AC doesn't work well.. My family passed around this awful virus through the whole month of June, so by the time we were ready to enjoy summer it was already unbearably hot!

I've lived here my whole life. September (some years) can feel like August until mid-late Sept. I got married on October 17th 12 years ago---particularly hoping for cooler Fall weather and it was 80 Degrees that day. It has been documented to being warmer than it was a few decades ago. I read an article that said the DC climate is now what North Carolina was many, many years ago.

Sometimes we get the nicer weather earlier---early to mid Sept low 70s, fresh air...but there are those years (like the year my firstborn was born on Sept 19th 5 years ago) when it can still be unbearably hot and humid until almost October.

I hate DC summers. I generally psyche myself up to make it to Sept...literally countdown the weeks in August.

I was born and raised here and as far back as I can remember, September has always been hit or miss. I have a feeling this September is going to be on the warmer side. One thing I can say, is whenever we have a bad winter (lots of snow and very cold), we tend to have a super hot summer. Spring seemed to kick in a bit late this year, so that is why I think the weather will be warmer longer than the norm.

Unless you have an infant, there really isn't any reason why you can't be outside for an hour or so when it is in the 90s. My son is out all day normally running around. I make him come inside every hour or so when it is really hot and cool off. I make him drink plenty of water but except on days when it is above 100 degrees, go outside and play.

Lived here my whole life...I can recall Christmas Days in the past when it was in the high 60's and a perfectly sunny day.

The weather will not truly start cooling down until mid October. You can easily still be wearing shorts on occasion up until Novemeber.

The PP is right - some Halloweens its in the 70's/80's other years its in the 50's. ]

I wish they did the tax free shopping days much later in the season when I actually needed to get long pants for my child...

Except for high noon time, I don't see why this weather is bad to be out. It's the winter that I can't stand. But we are usually out all day on the weekends and hate going inside. So not sure what the OP is complaining about.

I know exactly what the OP is talking about. On days when it's 100 degrees and code Orange we can only go in the back yard which is shady early in the morning. We can't even do the pool on those days because it's too much for the baby.

OP. I feel you. Humdity plus 90+heat is OPPRESSIVE and draining and generally yuck. If I want to feel any sort of normal at all on these days, I must be in air conditioning. I did not grow up in this.

Short answer: not soon enough!!

Are you going to complain when it gets cold out and want to know when it warms up again? You need to get your kid out in this sort of weather so they get used to it. It won't hurt the kid to go for a few walks or even break a sweat.

Not the OP, but yes, I will complain then too

Use the pool. Every WE we go at least once to the pool, or fill in the kiddie pool. Then we let the babies play in their wet swimming costume. We also use a water spray to wet them regularly.
