snap n go vs. bassinet

Anonymous
Is there an advantage to using a bassinet over a snap n/ go or car seat attachment w/ carseat for an infant? I'm just curious of people's experience- if we have the ability to get both, will the baby be more comfortable being in a bassinet if he is in the stroller for a long period of time?

Snap and go - I never got the bassinet in less you are taking a walk in the neighborhood and babies only like to lie down like that for a month or two. It would be very short lived to get a bassinet and if you used it shopping or for quick-in-out trips the nice thing about the snap and go is you don't have to wake the baby.

I have both.
We only use SnG when it's absolutely necessary. I just hate the fact that you pop the thing in and out without touching the baby. Babies need interaction, touch and stimulation. Leaving the baby in the same position for extended periods of time is harmful to them.
And now with the problem of flat head syndrome it's another reason for me to use it at all costs.
Car seats are FOR THE CAR. Companies sell such products appealing to the convenience but they never mention how bad it can be for the child's development.
Also the issues related to positional asphyxia... it gives me the chills!
The bassinet has been the greatest thing that ever happened to us. In this hot weather baby has room to wiggle around and be comfy. The UV shade protects the whole thing and there's even another cover for very cold weather.
We travel a lot and we just use the bassinet as a bed. It collapses and we can just pack with our stuff to take it anywhere.
Oh and let me tell you, the basket under our stroller is HUGE! we can easily go do groceries, shopping, any kind of outing and everything goes down there.
And every stroller that has the bassinet has the option to attach a toddler seat from when the child gets older and more active so the life of the stroller is much much longer than the SnG. Worth absolutely every single penny spent on it.

Snap n go, definitely. I am sure you will be giving your baby plenty of love and one-on-one stimulation, but when that baby is asleep in the carseat it's better for both of you not to have to wake him to move him from one to the other. Unless you are doing tons of both driving and walking, to the point where your kid would be spending the entire day in the carseat, I would go with the snap-n-go. Cheaper and super convenient.

snap n go. bassinets are SO EXPENSIVE and enormous. We also do mostly baby wearing, so have no concerns about no touch/stimulation.

I think everyone needs a Snap n Go--we keep ours in the car--but we also have an UPPAbaby and I LOVED the bassinet. Yes, the timeframe in which you use it is short, but for real walks, it is so much more comfortable for baby. We also used it as a travel crib. When are you due? That's what sold us on spending a lot of money on the UPPA. Baby was born in the Spring so I knew I would use my real stroller every single day during maternity leave. Had DS been a winter baby, we probably would have started with a Snap n Go and waited to buy a real stroller. By the way, I never got the car seat attachment for the UPPA because to me, it is too big of a stroller to use as a Snap n Go and for the same price approximately, you can buy a who;e separate Snap n Go frame which, as I said, we keep in the car.

I definitely say the BASSINET - it is not about YOUR comfort, but about the baby!!! Can you imagine the baby being in a car seat for a long time? It is really not good for his or her back and growth. If you look around Europe, there are mostly strollers with bassinets - that is what our mothers and grandmothers used. Do not choose your comfort over the babies health!

Snap N Go. Bassinette is very short-lived and expensive and can get really hot. I had one and never used it, same for friends. We used our carseat and Snap N Go all the time, along with our sling/baby wearing. Snap N Go is so much more convenient. I never kept DC in it for very long, just car rides and stroller rides. I have friends who left their kids in it all the time, including for naps. None of our kids had any breathing problems or flat head problems. Am using the snap n go again for Baby #2.

PP do you care to elaborate how is it possible for a child to get hot being comfortably placed in an open bassinet lined with natural organic fibers vs being cool inside a snug carseat made of foam and synthetic fibers where they're supposed to be tightly snapped on at all times?

I don't know why people are assuming that the OP is going to leave her kid in the snap and go carseat for like 4 hours. It is INCREDIBLY convenient to have a snap and go for those times when you need to pop into CVS and pick up a prescription or run into Target to pick up diapers.

We also used the carseat attachment on the occasions that we were pushing her in the stroller on walks. More often than not however, we had her in the Bjorn. I would skip the bassinet unless you have the extra cash/room.

PP you can't imagine how easily you'll get 4 hours of baby sitting on that thing. Someone posted the break up of the time the other day here and I was amazed.
it was something like:
15 min for you to get ready
15 min to drive to target
30 minutes shopping
15 minutes to drive to dry cleaner
5 minutes to pick up the clothes
10 minutes driving to grocery store
30 minutes grocery shopping
15 minutes drive home

when you get home the baby is asleep and you feel bad to wake them up so they stay 1 or 2 more hours there taking a nap.

see? time flies by and you don't even notice!

flat head syndrome is caused by babies lying on one flat surface too long . . . whether that be a car seat, stroller, pram, crib or bassinet PERIOD.

Another consideration is reflux. Our child had mild reflux and spit up all the time, so the bassinet never would have worked for us. The carseat at least provided a slight angle and helped keep the milk down better. We used the SnG for the first 6 months. I thought it was great. No flat head, etc. I am fairly certain that flat head is also related to torticollus (sp?) which means that the baby has a tendency to only turn head one way. This is related to things in utero, I believe. Good luck on your purchase decision.

mom and baby with reflux here.
we use the crib wedge thing on every surface baby will rest, including the stroller's bassinet.
